Dwayne Haggerty appears in court after Paralowie rooftop standoff and alleged carjacking

A man arrested after police were kept at bay for six hours while he stayed on a rooftop after a chase has faced court for the first time.

A Hectorville man arrested after a six-hour standoff with police over a knifepoint carjacking has applied for bail, and plead guilty to some of his charges.

On Friday, Dwayne Haggerty, 22, appeared before Magistrate Joanna Martin in the Elizabeth Magistrates court charged with aggravated committing theft using force, dangerous driving to cause a police pursuit and driving disqualified.

A court heard Mr Haggerty had already pleaded guilty to robbing a rideshare driver at knifepoint and driving disqualified, but no pleas had been entered into allegations he had driven dangerously.

He was not charged with any offences relating to the standoff.

Police prosecution alleged Mr Haggerty drove at speeds in excess of 130km/h during a police chase after the theft of a rideshare car in Edinburgh.

Prosecution told the court two men booked a rideshare driver through an app just after 2am on Thursday, February 1, on St Ives Dr in Parafield Gardens.

The man in the back seat held a knife to the driver’s throat and demanded he “hand over” his wallet, phone and keys.

The court heard the victim could feel the knife “pressed into his neck” and exited the car, handing over the items before they took off with his vehicle.

It was later discovered the victim’s dashcam and Apple airpods were among the stolen items.

At 3am, police used the car’s tracking system to follow it to West Ave, Edinburgh, and the PolAir helicopter pursued the vehicle, allegedly travelling at high speeds, until the suspects dumped it on Burton Rd at Paralowie and fled on foot.

Prosecution said Mr Haggerty then climbed on to the roof of a house, prompting a six-hour standoff with officers and police negotiators.

Mr Haggerty was later arrested after successful negotiations took place, and he was identified at the alleged driver.

Tahlia Penn, for Mr Haggerty, said her client had recently lost his employment at a fast food restaurant, and more recently his father, which had caused him to “spiral”.

“However, (Mr Haggerty) has told me that he does have strong ties to the community with his family and strong support systems in place and is also quite enthusiastic about commencing drug treatment as well,” Ms Penn said.

Ms Penn also said according to family members present in the body of the court, the allegations against him were “very out of character”.

Ms Martin said she was “very concerned” about the danger Mr Haggerty posed to the community through his behaviour.

She acknowledged that “clearly” the loss of his job and father had caused him to “spiral”, but said her job was to protect the community.

Ms Martin ordered a home detention report and Mr Haggerty is due to appear back before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court in a week. He was remanded into custody.
