Caleb Galffy arrested after high-speed smash

A young man who took a cocktail of drugs before speeding and crashing a stolen motorbike, breaking his former girlfriend’s leg could be released from jail this year.

On Tuesday, Judge Jane Schammer warned Caleb Levi Galffy if he wanted to avoid wasting “the rest of your 20s in jail” he would need to stay clean – and stop breaching his good behaviour bonds.

The court heard the 23-year-old had been released from prison just over two months earlier on a good behaviour bond before he relapsed into using meth.

Court-released footage shows the moment of the crash as seen from a car’s dashcam, revealing the smash happened directly in front of a police car waiting at the lights.

More footage reveals how the drug-fuelled hoon was found hiding wearing just a towel behind a shed, with an officer warning he would be bitten by a police dog if he moved.

Galffy, from Paralowie, was previously sentenced for five counts of theft, two counts of property damage and one count of threatening life.

He pleaded guilty to aggravated cause harm by dangerous driving and numerous other driving charges after the collision in July last year that left his former girlfriend with a serious fracture and knee injury.

The court heard the motorbike was stolen from an international student who had just purchased it for $5000, and Galffy had paid a friend for it “knowing it was stolen”.

“That vehicle had damage to its ignition to enable it to be hot-wired,” Her Honour said.

Galffy, who was also unlicensed, was heading west down Waterloo Corner with pillion passenger – his former girlfriend – at 84.7km h before he collided with a white Holden Commodore lawfully turning right at the Baxters Rd intersection.

Both were “thrown in the air” before landing metres away.

Following the accident, Galffy was taken to hospital alongside his former girlfriend, but was “aggressive and uncooperative” and resulted in a code black, before he self-discharged some time later.

Hospital blood tests showed he was affected at the time by methamphetamine, amphetamine, THC and paracetamol.

Judge Schammer said she accepted he was “genuinely remorseful” and hoped he was able to “turn your life around for the better.”

“It is clear you have a number of positive qualities which are unfortunately overshadowed by your criminal and other behaviour,” Her Honour said.

“Your grandmother has spoken of the considerable assistance you have provided to her and your grandfather while … it is something they very much miss every time you are sent back to jail.”

Her Honour said with his penalty discount for his guilty plea – and the penalty for breaching his bonds – Galffy was to serve two years and nine months in jail, with a fifteen-month non parole period.

The sentence was backdated to his arrest in August 2023 meaning he will be eligible for parole in November.
