It may take weeks to determine whether bones found by the side of a road outside Strathalbyn are human and how long they had been there, police say.
The remains were found late Friday by a passer-by on Paris Creek Road, beneath an olive tree which had recently been pruned back as part of regular maintenance work.
Police on Friday blocked off a 5km stretch of the road between Schmidt Rd and Blackburn Boulevard until 2pm, as they examined the scene along with forensic investigators, specialist STAR Group officers and SES volunteers.
Nigel Giles, who lives at the top of a long driveway directly opposite where the remains were found, said he had returned from Adelaide on Friday afternoon.
“Apparently later on they had flashing lights … but we didn’t notice, as close as we are to the road, because you just go off to bed and don’t worry,” Mr Giles said.
He had not been aware of the police activity until Saturday morning, when he made a trip into Strathalbyn.
“It was a shock. You don’t know anything about what goes on in your own town,” Mr Giles said.
Inspector Mark McEachern from Major Crimes oattended the scene but said the investigation was being handled by Fleurieu Hills Police while the remains are tested.
“Our suspicion is that they are human,” he said.
“They’ll be subject to some forensic testing. They’e quite old but we’re not sure. We won’t know until after that testing, and that could take a week or so, or longer.”
Police were not looking for any further remains at this time.
The road has since reopened to traffic.
