A neighbour of the house engulfed by flames which took the life of Monica, 18, said she heard the girl’s older sister screaming before the sound of a “huge bang”.

Monica Fry is being remembered as a “bubbly girl” after she lost her life in a tragic house fire in Angle Park.

Jennifer Hannam, the grandmother of sisters and occupants Monica, 18, and Drewicilla Fry, 19, said it was “very upsetting” to hear about the fire.

Ms Hannam said 18-year-old Monica, who she said lost her life in the fire, had a bubbly personality.

“(Monica) is a very bubbly type child, she’s always been sort of outgoing and loving,” she said.

The grandmother said she heard the devastating news this morning from her youngest daughter.

“She said that Monica was in the bedroom and Drewicilla was in the kitchen.”

“Evidently Drewicilla smelt smoke or saw smoke or something.

“By the time she’d come to the front room, to try and get Monica out of the room, it was too late.

“She said she could hear poor Monica screaming but she just couldn’t get her out of the room.”

Ms Hannam said she hadn’t seen the girls for about six years as they had been in foster care.

“They were getting their lives back on track and unfortunately this has happened now.”

The grandmother said the girls had always been close despite being in separate foster homes.

Ms Hannam believes that 19-year-old Drewicilla had moved into the home initially before Monica joined her after she got out of foster care.

“It was somewhere for Monica to go once she came out of care,” she said.

The grandmother said she is trying her hardest to “stay strong”.

“I’m trying not to be too upset because if I fall to pieces and my daughter falls to pieces then I’m not going to be able to support her,” she said.

Ms Hannam laid flowers at the Murray St house on Saturday afternoon for Monica.

“I thought I’d just come round and put some flowers here at the house for Monica,” she said.

Ms Hannam said Drewicilla is still recovering in hospital and she believes she has “severe burns” to her hands and face.

“They said that she (Drewicilla) is pretty distraught and not very mentally well at the moment, which I can understand.”

Ms Hannam said she understands her daughter, the girl’s mother, and their older sister, Stevie, are at the hospital with Drewicilla.

“I understand my daughter, I haven’t had a chance to talk to her, is very distraught.”

Police are investigating the fatal house fire that broke out at an Angle Park home on Friday afternoon claiming the life of Monica Fry, 18, and injuring her 19-year-old sister

Investigators were on scene again early Saturday morning sifting through debris left by the fire.

The body of Ms Fry, of Prospect, was found inside the house, while her sister Drew, 19, who lived at the home, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Ms Fry’s death is not being treated as suspicious and police said no one else was being sought over the fire.

Neighbours say the 19-year-old woman emerged from the house, desperately calling for her sister and crying hysterically.

Good Samaritans rushed to her aid, giving her water, which she asked to be splashed on her face.

Fellow Murray St residents said the two women had recently moved into the house and kept to themselves.

The front room of the Murray St home has been completely destroyed, with only the structure and frame of the window remaining.

Police were seen removing evidence from the house.

Emergency services were called to the Murray St house just before 2.30pm after reports a fire had erupted in the front bedroom of the property.

Fourteen Metropolitan Fire Service firefighters extinguished the blaze with three vehicles and a command truck within about 40 minutes.

Peter Seery, a nearby neighbour on Stuart St and ex-CFS volunteer, said he rushed to help after he heard a loud bang.

Mr Seery used a hose, with another CFS worker, in attempt to extinguish the fire.

“The girl was screaming ‘someone’s in there’,” he said.

“We just got to it.”

The ex CFS volunteer got teary when describing how he wanted to go in through the front door and save the Monica.

“I wouldn’t have survived it,” he said.

Mr Seery said the adrenaline he felt was “going through the roof”.

The nearby resident said he used to walk past the house and the girls seemed lovely.

Another neighbour said she heard Drewicilla screaming “my sister, my sister” as flames engulfed the room.

Stasie Leonard, a Murray St resident, said she heard a “huge bang” and could smell smoke at about 2.30pm.

Ms Leonard then went outside where she said she saw smoke.

“I saw smoke and heard another bang,” she said. “Flames were rushing out the window.”
