An elderly man will face court after a mother and father walking a dog were struck by a van in the eastern suburbs.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the intersection of Montacute Rd and Forest Ave, Newton, about 8.50am on Friday after a van collided with two pedestrians.

Police said the van driver, a 91-year-old Rostrevor man, was reported while a 48-year-old Newton woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 51-year-old man from Newton was also rushed to hospital, with significant injuries.

Newton resident Scott Subbiah said after hearing a “loud thud” from inside his home he saw his neighbour lying on the road as her husband signalled “slow down” to a van that had hit her.

“It looked like the driver wasn’t sure what he had hit,” he said.

Mr Subbiah said the couple’s young son was also at the scene after the pair had been walking their husky on Montacute Rd at the time.

He said the husband “got thrown to the ground” but the man’s focus turned to helping his wife, along with other witnesses who called triple zero.

The van driver has been reported for two counts of dangerous driving and issued an indefinite instant loss of licence, after he was taken to hospital for mandatory blood tests and interviewed by police.

Mr Subbiah said the woman had been bleeding from her face, while their son and pet did not appear to be injured.

He said the intersection of Forest Ave and Montacute Rd was “risky” and “one thing or the other keeps happening” at the spot.

Major Crash officers attended the scene and investigated the crash on Friday morning.

The van driver will be summonsed to court at a later date.

Local Steve Ives, 75, lives on the intersection where the crash occurred and arrived at the scene about a minute afterwards. He helped direct traffic along with other witnesses, before six ambulances attended.

Mr Ives said it was the worst of three crashes he had seen at the intersection in the past two years, including a car driving through his front fence about 18 months ago.

Other residents told The Advertiser several recent crashes had occurred at the intersection.

Police also attended another crash on Lyons Rd, Holden Hill, just east of Tarton Rd on Friday morning and asked road users to avoid that area.
