South Adelaide is the 2021 SANFL under-16 Torrens University Cup premier, after beating Glenelg in the grand final on Sunday.

In the huge Anzac Day clash, which was live streamed by The Advertiser, South proved too strong for Glenelg, prevailing 16.8 (104) to 7.9 (51) at Noarlunga.

The Panthers made history with the win, having not claimed an under-16 flag in 26 years.

Glenelg led by six points at the main break but the Panthers booted 16 goals and held the Tigers to just two in the second half, setting up the victory.

South ruckman Tom Schirmer (15 touches, 26 hit-outs, five clearances, four inside 50s and a goal) was named best on ground.

Jake Daris (20 possessions, five tackles and four clearances) and skipper Tom Wheaton (16 disposals, six tackles, four clearances and a goal) were also strong for the Panthers.

Panthers full-forward Jack Delean, who was named as a player to watch before the match, was well-held in the first-half but ended the match with 3.2.

Jake Agnew and Phoenix Hargrave were also solid inside 50, finishing with two goals each.

South coach Brett Hudson credited the Tigers for their performance but said his side deserved the victory.

“Glenelg has been the benchmark in the competition for a while and we knew they were going to be good,” Hudson said.

“But we felt that if we stuck to our process that things would turn our way at some point, which they did.

“I am just really pleased with the way the boys played.

“We spoke to them (at half-time) about lifting our tackle pressure and taking a bit more territory by kicking more.

“We felt if we could get the game in our front half, it would play to our strengths more than theirs and try to lock the ball in there

Hudson said players, support staff and coaches had been working hard to win a flag in the under-16 competition for a long time.

“It’s enjoyable to see the kids have that success,” Hudson said.

“Then also to see the South Adelaide area and supporters down here who have been a little bit starved of success and who were really keen to see us win one.

“We had been working hard to get ourselves up there, which we have, so it’s a really good reward for the club itself, I think.”

The Panthers earned a berth in this year’s flag decider after a strong victory over North Adelaide in the semi-final, while the Tigers proved too strong for Sturt last week.

Glenelg was aiming for its fifth-straight under-16 flag, having won the past four flags in the competition, their last being in 2019 as last year’s campaign was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tigers fought hard and were led by Lucas Camporeale, son of former Carlton and Essendon midfielder, (22 disposals, three tackles, one clearances).

Captain Ben Ridgway also battled strongly with 19 touches, eight tackles, three inside 50s and 2.2.

Josh Altus was the Tigers other multiple goal-kicker, ending the match with two majors.

In his post-match speech, Ridgway said he was proud of his side, despite the loss.

“Congratulations to South Adelaide, you’ve been a good team all year and you played well today,” Ridgway said.

“To our boys, congratulations, I’m so proud of you, onwards and upwards from here.”
