The SANFL Development Leagues returned on Friday night with Sturt taking on Central District at Unley Oval.

And all the action was live streamed exclusively on The Advertiser website.

The Double Blues got the better of the Dogs in the opening under-13 contest, with the hosts running out 6.4 (40) to 3.0 (18) victors.

But Central was able to turn the tables and overpower a slow-starting Sturt in the under-14 clash as it triumphed 9.5 (59) to 7.7 (49).

PREVIEW: BLUES BROTHERS BUILDING AT STURT

Sturt is benefiting from sibling success in its junior ranks with a host on budding young Double Blues joining their older brothers at the club.

The club’s top under-13 and under-14 boys will be in action on Friday night when they face Central District in the SANFL Development Leagues

They include the like of under-13 player Flynn Torode, who is in his first season at the club. Older brother Will is a key part of the Double Blues’ under-18s this season.

There’s also Naite (U14) and Luca Slade (U18) – the sons of Central District premiership player Matthew Slade – and several others.

Sturt centre of excellence manager Michael Higgs said seeing their older siblings come through the ranks at Unley Oval inspired the young footballers to follow in their footsteps.

“Particularly the under-13s with older siblings in the under-18s, they’ve seen them go through the Sturt program for six years,” Higgs said.

“They’ve been wanting to pull on that guernsey the whole time and hoping one day their local club will nominate them to go through the trial process and one day make the squad.

“Now they’ve all gone through that and they finally get to put on the Double Blue guernsey.

“It’s exciting for the player, the family and the club.”

Higgs said the growth of female football also meant the Sturt now experienced younger sisters following the same pathway as well.

“It brings that community and family feel to the club with one sibling joining, a younger brother or sister then comes through and the parents are well known at the club,” he said.

The SANFL Development Leagues, which feature under-13, 14 and 15 boys as well as under-14 and 16 girls competitions, are the first stepping stones in the pathway to senior state league football.
