In Friday night’s opening under-13s clash, it was a tight affair all game with West just edging out South in a 4.3 (27) to 3.7 (25) victory.

The Panthers had their chances in the final quarter but were unable to capitalise in an admirable first-up performance from both sides.

However, South brought its kicking boots in the under-14 match and finished strong to prevail 8.1 (49) to 5.3 (33) over the hosts.

PREVIEW: BLOODS BROTHERS ON SANFL TALENT PATH

If any family typifies the SANFL talent breeding ground right now, it is West Adelaide’s Ryan brothers.

Under-18 talent Kobe – an AFL Draft prospect who will make his first league appearance for the club this weekend – and under-16 player Harper have both come through the system at the Bloods.

Now they will be joined by younger brother, Tanner.

The 13-year-old will debut for West in the SANFL Development League, which is the first stepping stone along the state’s elite talent pathway.

And for the first time, the competition will be live streamed by The Advertiser this season, beginning with the Bloods taking on South Adelaide in the under-13 and 14 boys this Friday night.

Tanner said he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his older brothers up the age groups at West and hoped he could adapt to the step up.

“It’s a bit nerve-racking but I’m pretty excited to play for West for the first time,” Tanner said.

“There’s going to be a lot of talented players out there and it will be a bit harder than playing local club footy.

“I’m excited for Kobe as well, playing his first league game.”

Kobe, 18, said to tick off his senior debut was a big milestone as he eyed the under-18 national championships and AFL Draft later this year.

“This was probably the top goal I had. I’ve always wanted to play in the league team so to find out I was picked, I was just stoked,” Kobe said.

“To play for a SANFL club for the first time is a real highlight and I think Tanner is pretty keen to make his debut as well.

“It’s one of the most exciting things at that age.”

Harper, 14, said the three brothers – all products of the Plympton Football Club – were close and came in a similar mould as prolific, ball-winning midfielders.

“Kobe being the oldest has been very helpful for us, he’s given me a lot of tips with training and when I had my first game the other week,” said Harper, who has played above his age in the under-16s this season.

The SANFL Development Leagues, which feature under-15, 14 and 13 boys as well as under-14 and 16 girls competitions, are the first stepping stones in the pathway to senior football.

The Advertiser will live stream weekly matches beginning with West and South in the under-13 boys at 5.30pm Friday night, followed by the under-14 boys at 6.50pm.

West Adelaide talent manager Paul Streatfield said it was a big focus for the club to provide opportunities to boys and girls at an early age.

“To see multiple siblings from the one family coming through the grades is really exciting and I know they’re thrilled to be out here together,” Streatfield said.

The live streaming commitment follows The Advertiser’s season long broadcast coverage of the men’s, women’s, under-18s and under-16s SANFL competitions.
