Norwood’s junior development program flexed its muscle on the road with comfortable wins over the Eagles at Woodville Oval.
The Redlegs under-13 outfit were clean through the midfield and made the most of their chances on goal, as they overcame a shaky start to record a 6.4 (40) to 1.6 (12) win.
Norwood conceded an early goal as the two sides headed to the first break locked at 7-7, but it would be the only goal they let through across a strong night for the club.
The Redlegs under-14s side, who are coached by Norwood senior player Harry Boyd, capped off a big night for the club with a dominant 9.5(59) to 5.7(37) win over the Eagles.
Norwood led early in the clash after sneaking three goals in the opening quarter and took a 20-point lead into the half.
A valiant Woodville-West Torrens refused to stop fighting throughout the clash, and finished with a 13-point final term, but it was not enough to catch the Redlegs.
PREVIEW: Young guns given the tools to succeed
The next Magarey Medallist or AFL draftee could be unearthed when the new generation of Eagles and Redlegs take to the field for the SANFL Development Leagues.
Woodville-West Torrens and Norwood will clash in the under-13 and under-14 boys at Woodville Oval this Thursday night.
Following The Advertiser’s inaugural live stream of the competition last week, the matches will be live and exclusively broadcast here at 5.30pm and 6.50pm.
The SANFL Development Leagues, which feature under-15, 14 and 13 boys as well as under-14 and 16 girls competitions, are the first stepping stones in the pathway to senior football.
Woodville-West Torrens talent manager Darren Hams said the talented up-and-coming juniors, who have been identified from the club’s metropolitan zone, got a “real buzz” out of the experience.
“It’s a good opportunity and the kids really love it, particularly playing on league ovals, sharing the changerooms of league players and things like that,” Hams said.
“Guys like Jack Lukosius through this program and Lachie Jones through our country pathway … pretty much every kid who has been drafted from our zone has come through these metro or country development squads.”
Norwood development and pathways coordinator Craig Roberts said it was important to give the youngsters a positive experience when pulling on the guernsey for the first time, helped by two senior Redlegs lending a hand.
“We’ve really gone well with our coaching this year with Declan Hamilton coaching our under-13s and Harry Boyd coaching the under-14s,” Roberts said.
“The program they’ve created stems straight from the top, which really helps with development as players come through the grades.
“Harry recently made the state team (to face the WAFL this weekend) and Declan was in the squad, so to have guys of that stature involved is invaluable.”
Weekly matches from the SANFL Development Leagues will be broadcast on advertiser.com.au, with this week’s Eagles and Norwood clashes beginning at 5.30pm (U13s) and 6.50pm (U14s) on Thursday night.
The live streaming commitment follows The Advertiser’s season long SANFL broadcast coverage of the men’s, women’s, under-18s and under-16s competitions.
