For Lower Eyre Peninsula twins Tate and Billy Boxer, they wanted nothing more than to play for their region just like their older brother and father.
But the Port Lincoln siblings went one better, as their team broke a long drought to take out the Year 6 country division one title at the Sapsasa carnival.
“It was great,” Tate said.
“We haven’t won it in 20 years, so it was awesome.”
Billy said the competition across the week was tough.
“We managed to work as a team, fight it out and managed to win,” he said.
The Marble Range Football Club players were key members of the Lower EP team, which finished top of the standings with 25 premiership points ahead of Gawler on 22.
Southern Fleurieu swept aside all before it to triumph in the Year 6 division two competition, going undefeated.
Strathalbyn mini colts captain Sam Walsh said the secret behind the team’s success was that it was able to gel quickly at the carnival.
“It was good to play against a bunch of different regions,” Sam, 11, said.
“We played against (teams) like Western Eyre Peninsula, all the way to Lower South East.
“The best game to play in was probably against Kangaroo Island, they put up a pretty good fight.”
Just like his Carlton namesake, Sam racked up plenty of footy in the midfield for Southern Fleurieu.
Northern Yorke Peninsula had a consistent tournament to finish just behind in second place, while North Eastern came in third.
The wins continued later in the week for Southern Fleurieu, which also triumphed in the Year 7 country division two competition.
The team racked up 27 premiership points to edge out Northern Yorke Peninsula (25), North Eastern (21) and Western Eyre Peninsula for the title.
Lower South East took home the Year 7 country division one flag, after amassing 25 competition points to top the standings.
It finished two clear of Lower Eyre Peninsula, Upper South East and Mid North (all 23 points), who shared the runner-up placing.

Sophie Neumann was part of a Southern Fleurieu side which went undefeated on its way to winning the Year 6 country division one netball crown.
The Eastern Fleurieu Primary student said playing with new people and against regions from across the state was daunting at first.
“It was a bit nerve-racking at the start, but after the first day it was a bit more normal and I had fun,” Sophie, 11, said.
“We used teamwork very well, we trained very hard and we just concentrated very well.”
Southern Fleurieu managed to keep its opponents to low scores across the carnival and come out on top with a division-high 27 premiership points.
Mid South East came in second, while Riverland and Lower Eyre Peninsula tied for third.
Barossa and Light proved too strong in the Year 6 country division two competition.
It tallied 27 premiership points to finish ahead of Northern Yorke Peninsula and North Eastern (both 21) in the standings.
In the Year 7 carnivals, Mid South East took out the division one premiership ahead of Southern Fleurieu on Friday.
Upper South East was triumphant in division two, beating Barossa and Light to the crown.

A mixture of tight contests and big wins were had across the journey for the victorious Port Year 7 metro division two team.
Largs Bay Primary and Garville player Isabella Nisbitt was happy to finish her last year of Sapsasa by helping Port win the title.
“We got to learn heaps of skills and meet lots of new friends,” Isabella, 12, said.
“It was really good.
“Playing against other teams and seeing how everyone played differently was interesting.
“There was a mixture of different skills in teams and some were really tough.”
A crucial 19-11 win over East Adelaide, which finished second, and a 19-18 triumph against Adelaide North East were key victories in Port’s carnival.
ANE and Torrens River tied for third place.
Airport did not miss a beat, as it won every match on its way to taking out the Year 7 metro division one premiership.
Adelaide South East was not far behind however, just two points back.
In the Year 6 carnivals which finished on Friday, South West came out on top in division one with Adelaide South East and Southern Heights tied for second place.
