Now the next generation of regional players are set to shine in The Advertiser and The Messenger’s live stream of the School Sport SA Sapsasa state country football carnival.

Teams from 20 districts across the state will be in action at Barratt Reserve, West Beach, from Monday, May 31, to Friday, June 4.

The Year 6 and 7 tournaments will be streamed exclusively on advertiser.com.au with 62 matches broadcast from two ovals daily in the lightning carnival-style fixture (see schedule below).

Freeling Football Club young gun Charlie Morris will represent Barossa & Light and was keen to follow in the footsteps of country greats and make his mark at the tournament.

The 12-year-old, who models his game on Adelaide Crows midfielder Ben Keays, was not short of ambition.

“I’m really excited because I missed out on playing last year because of Covid,” Charlie said.

“It will be good to play against other people with good skill level.

“I’m hoping we can win the whole thing.”

Carnival co-ordinator Wade Hall said Sapsasa was a key part of the journey for young country footballers.

“Talk to most people that have been involved in footy as a kid in South Australia and they’ve got a story about Sapsasa,” Hall said.

“It’s a big highlight for everyone involved and for country people to be able to watch their kids on the live stream will be great.”

The tournament is one of the School Sport SA Sapsasa carnivals, which also include metro football and country and metro netball.

In total, 196 games will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au with fixtures broadcast simultaneously from two ovals or courts on each of the 15 days of competition.

The country football tournament, which kicks off at 10.50am on Monday, will feature two divisions in each year level and each district will supply two teams.

Metro football will take place from June 21-25.
