They are among South Australia’s biggest junior sporting festivals and now the Sapsasa Football Carnivals are set to go to another level in 2022.
Thousands of students will take part in the expanded School Sport SA events this month, which will be live streamed by The Advertiser across six days of action.
The Sapsasa Metro and Country Football Carnivals, which will feature the boys and girls competitions playing simultaneously for the first time, will take place from May 25 to 27 and May 30 to June 1 respectively.
Featuring shortened clashes in a lightning carnival-style fixture, matches from every day of both carnivals will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au.
It follows The Advertiser’s first broadcast of Sapsasa last year.
School Sport SA football co-ordinator Wade Hall said it was exciting to run the boys and girls tournaments together at Barratt Reserve, West Beach.
“We had the full girls’ carnival for the first time last year in the Sapsasa district format and now we’ve been able to combine it with the boys’ carnival,” Hall said.
“It’s going to be a pretty awesome atmosphere and cool to see.”
The shift of Year 7 to high school in SA has meant the carnivals have moved to a combined format of Year 5 and 6 students.
Hall described Sapsasa as a “rite of passage”, with more than 1000 youngsters in 80 teams from 20 districts set to compete in the metro and country football competitions.
“When it comes to sport, it’s a quintessential South Australian childhood representing your district at Sapsasa, making new friends and getting to the carnival and making more from across the state,” he said.
