Two of South Australia’s top skateboarding figures can’t wait for this weekend’s BMD Southern Rumble in Adelaide and are confident it will take the sport to new heights in the state.

Free Mind Skate School founder Josh Smith, who coaches skateboarding and promotes youth mentoring in the south of Adelaide, is ‘excited’ about the potential the event can have on the Adelaide skating community.

KommunityTV will exclusively LIVE STREAM the street event action from Christies Beach on Saturday afternoon, starting with female Open event from 3pm.

Check the LIVE STREAM schedule below for full details.

“I’m so excited about the Rumble because it’s a chance to show the Adelaide skating community how good a 13-year-old or 16-year-old can be and get them excited about the sport,” Smith said.

“It showcases what skateboarding can be and it also shows that skateboarding can actually be a career in a number of ways, which I also think is important.”

Smith, who has been part of the SA skate scene for around 20 years, has seen significant growth in popularity and participation during his time running Free Mind.

He believed SA could get to the same level as the eastern states if the trend continued.

“We’ve seen massive growth in the community in recent years,” Smith said.

“Even just in Free Mind, we started about three years ago and now we’ve got 12 staff and coaches, and we’ve got hundreds of kids coming through regularly.

“I think the skate scene here in SA has the potential to be really good – we’ve certainly got a lot of talent, but there’s a lot of work to be done and I think the Rumble can be a big stepping stone.”

Apex Vac Solutions director Andrew Mills opened up his business warehouse space for Free Mind and also sponsors a number of skateboarding events around the state.

He believed the Southern Rumble would further promote the sport’s community aspect.

“I get a really big kick out of seeing the kids enjoy themselves,” Mills said.

“I’m not a big skateboarder but I’m really big on giving kids something to pursue and a space where they can be in a community and enjoy themselves.

“We’re seeing a huge growth in participation of kids, not just in SA but across the country as well, especially in the U12 age group and with a lot of females as well, which is fantastic.

“Having the Rumble here is huge. Last year I was blown away by how many kids were down there and it’s really good to see that they get a sense of community, and that the sport is starting to really pick up.”
