Cleo Taylor and Novak Palombo justified their top seedings with straight sets victories in the 12/U finals at the Australian Hardcourt Tennis Championships in Adelaide on Monday.
Taylor, who didn’t drop a set all week, beat No.2 seed Ana Maric 7-5 6-1. While Taylor only got the decisive first set break late on, she cruised through the second.
Meanwhile, rising star Palombo had his final against Aleksandr Kharkov settled nice and early, winning 6-1 6-2.
Tori Russell completed an excellent week with a comfortable straight sets win over fellow Queenslander Ceressa Jackson in the 14/U girls decider.
Russell had already won the doubles decider on Sunday with partner Karin Hiramatsu.
In the boys 14/U singles final, third seed Raphael Savelli is the champion after opponent, seventh seed Lachlan Rye, was forced to retire after losing the first set 6-4.

Queenslander Tori Russell is through to the girls’ under-14 final after being pushed to three sets by New South Wales’ Suri Suchovsky.
Russell took the first set 6-4 before third seed Suchovsky lifted immensely in the second to surprise the tournament top seed and square the ledger with a 6-4 result.
But Russell, sensing the danger, put the accelator down in the final set to race to a 6-0 outcome and a statement victory.
She will meet fellow Queenslander Ceressa Jackson after the No. 2 seed took care of Victoria’s Musemma Cilek, the No. 7 seed, 6-3 6-3.
The boys’ and girls’ under-12 doubles finals were decisive victories with both winning pairs clearly dominant.
No. 1 seeds Ana Maric and Lara Wu always had the measure of third seeds Ayumi Ito and Esther Meng as they charged to a 6-3 6-1 triumph.
Arrush Gaikwad and Preston Shawcross, the No. 3 seeds, enjoyed a similar scoreline against Zayn Cameron and Christopher Manton, recording a 6-4 6-1 victory.
Top seeds Sehun Park and Jake Spurrell have raced to a comprehensive victory in the boys’ under-14 doubles final.
In a lopsided encounter, Park and Spurrell raced through the opening set 6-0 as opponents Zachary Chai and Antoni Luo had no answers to the bombardment.
The second was more of the same treatment as Park and Spurrell cruised to a 6-0 6-1 triumph.
Tori Russell and Karin Hiramatru have recovered from a midgame slump to take out the girls’ under-14 doubles decider.
Russell, appearing after progressing to the final of singles format, and Hiramatru took out the first set 7-5 but were on the receiving end of some long rallies as Elise Virr and Isabella Welsh went to work.
And the contest totally flipped on its head when Virr and Welsh swept through the second set 6-1.
But somehow the No. 1 seeds shook of their dogged opponents to regroup to take out the extended tie-breaker 10-4.

DAY 2 WRAP
A day after stunning top-seed Ren Asai in the first round of the Australian Hardcourt Championships in Adelaide, Queenslander Antoni Luo exited in the under-14 boys round of 16 in a hard-fought straight set loss to South Australian Ashton Lim.
Lim, who is partnered with Asai in the doubles draw, fought his way through to the singles quarterfinals with a 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 win over Luo on Thursday.
With the first set going down to a tie-breaker, it proved a see-sawing second set as both players broke each other on multiple occasions.
Lim looked in control early, breaking Luo in the first game but the Queenslander struck back soon after to make it 2-2 before breaking again to go 2-4 up.
But Lim stayed in the fight to force it back to 5-all before holding his nerve to close both the set, 7-5, and the match.

Meanwhile, top under-12 seed Cleo Taylor booked a quarter final berth but it was not without an early fight by Kaitlyn Poon.
Taylor won in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, despite giving up an early set point.
With Taylor looking to close the first set, on 6-5 and 40-30, Poon saved the set point before breaking Taylor to bring on the tie-breaker.
But Taylor soon settled to easily wrap up the first set with a 7-4 tie-breaker, as well as the second set 6-3, to set up a quarter final match against five-seed Ayumi Ito.
In other matches, under-12 and under-14 second seeds Aleksandr Kharkov and Jake Spurrell breezed through to their respective round of 16 boys matches with identical 6-2, 6-1 wins over hometown wildcard entry Aahan Soni and Victorian Joel Roney.

DAY ONE WRAP
Under-14 girls top seed Tori Russell made no mistakes in her opening match at the Australian Hardcourt Championships in Adelaide.
The Gold Coast native, who has enjoyed a stellar year on the Australian junior circuit in 2024, knocked off hometown hero Hannah Park 7-5, 6-1 in straight sets on Wednesday.
The clash headlined a big opening day on the showcourt at West Lakes Tennis Club in which a fellow top seed also made a dominant start to the tournament.

While she might have exploded into the Round of 16 with the straight sets win, it was far from a cruise for Russell after she withstood a tough fightback from Park in a first set.
Despite being broken early, Park rallied late in the first set to pick up a late breakpoint and fight her way back to even keel with her rival.
Russell produced a brilliant rally of her own to break back on the next serve and set up the 7-5 first set win, before dominating the second set.
Under-12 boys top seed Novak Palombo made little mistakes in his tournament opener on Wednesday, dropping only one game to rival Edmund Limbert in a straight sets win.
Palombo wasted little time in the match dispatching of Limbert 6-0, 6-1 in little over an hour.
In other action on Wednesday, Ayumi Ito defeated Samantha Sun 6-2, 7-6 while Nikola Markulin made a strong start to the boys Under-14 championships with a straight sets win over Aidan Chan.

PREVIEW
Twelve-year-old Novak Palombo, who won the national grasscourt title back in January, headlines a stellar class of talent for the Australian Junior Hardcourt Championships in Adelaide this week.
Over 100 players will compete for the 12-and-under and 14-and-under boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles titles.
The coverage continues the partnership between KTV and Tennis Australia, which has already included the Australian Grasscourt Championships in January, the Junior Claycourt Championships in mid-April and the Australian Junior Teams Championships in June and July.
Victorian Palombo started the year in flying form, winning the grasscourt title in Mildura, and will be the 12/u boys top seed in Adelaide.
But he faces some stiff competition, with the likes of NSW duo Aleksandr Kharkov and
Sebastian Lavorato expected to do well.
The 14/u boys title is seen as a battle between players from Victoria and Queensland. Victoria have four of the five top seeds, with Ren Asai sitting at No. 1 in front of Queenslander Jake Spurrell.
Queenslanders Cleo Taylor and Tori Russell are the favourites in the 12/u and 14/u girls divisions, with Russell gunning for her second national title after claiming the 12/u claycourt championship in 2023.
