The first champions of The Rumble season have been crowned after a thrilling night at the Christie Downs skate park.

Two world title contenders have taken the prizes in the opens division of the Southern Rumble, pulling off a perfect start for what will be a massive year for Australian skateboarders.

Catch up with all of the finals action below and see the full session replays from a monster night.

OPEN MEN’S FINAL

Kiama kickflipper Daniel Woolley has kickstarted a massive year in perfect form with a dominant win at the BMD Southern Rumble.

The NSW rising star, who is the younger brother of Australian Olympic finalist and X Games gold medallist Kieran Woolley, was untouchable in the open men’s final at the Christie Downs skate park.

With the pressure off, after growing an unassailable lead going into the best trick section of the final, Woolley put the exclamation mark on his near-perfect performance with a massive big flip boardslide down the double set rail.

But the impressive teenager had done all of his damage already with three huge runs to kick start the final.

Woolley locked in a competition high score of 71 points on his first run in the finals, and then managed to improve upon it with a huge 82 point ride.

Sunshine Coast young gun Taj Branch, who was a teammate of Woolley’s in Tokyo last month, pulled out a last minute backside lipslide down the big rail to steal second place from underneath rival River Lawson.

Branch scored an impressive 59.33 for his final attempt at the single trick, which added to his two 50-point runs earlier in the final to finish a mere four points ahead of his rival.

OPEN WOMEN’S FINAL

A huge kickflip to crooked grind combo was the only thing to separate two of Australia’s leading female skateboarders in a thrilling final.

NSW Olympic hopeful Felicity Turner came out on top after a two-woman shoot-out in the best trick section of the Open Women’s final at the BMD Southern Rumble.

Turner was locked in an intense battle with Team Australia teammate Haylie Powell after the pair were standouts through the three-run section of the final.

The two skateboarders were part of Australia’s team at the Street World Championships in Tokyo last month, and the experience showed on the course as they took control of the Christie Downs street course.

But in the end it would come down to one trick, with Turner’s flip to grind combo on the bump rail outscoring Powell’s monster kick-flip down the double set staircase.

Powell had one last shot to retake the crown, attempting a backside big spin off the planter, but couldn’t keep her board under her feet on the slippery street course surface.

The pair had been neck and neck coming out of the run section after throwing down three 50-plus scores each with a mix of exciting tricks and crisp runs.

Megan Rawlings finished in third place for the final after several well composed runs around the course.

MASTERS FINAL

The first champion has been crowned at the BMD Southern Rumble on a massive day of skateboarding action in Adelaide.

Geelong veteran Steve McInnes put an exclamation point on a wild Masters Final jam session with a ripping nose slide across the ledge and down the kicker at the Christie Downs Skate Park.

The Victorian skateboarder, who lost his wife Melanie to a cancer battle in November, took inspiration from her fight as he took on some of the nation’s best at the BMD Southern Rumble.

The Masters final at the first stop on the Rumble Tour was turned into a best trick jam session, with heavy metal legends Iron Maiden and Metallica providing a perfect soundtrack to the chaos on the Christie Downs street course.

With skateboarders going in all directions, and attacking obstacles with reckless abandon, it was a shock the judges were able to stay on top of the action to score a winning trick.

But with 80 points already on the board, McInnes took the decision out of the judge’s hands as he executed a perfect nose slide across one of the course’s toughest obstacles.

Leif McCaughley and Saul Matthews finished in the top three for the masters final with 75 points and 70 points respectively.

Preview: The best young athletes ready to tear up Southern Rumble

Olympic hopefuls and world title contenders will blaze a trail across the Christie Downs street course as the BMD Southern Rumble kicks off a huge year of Australian skateboarding.

With skateboarding at the forefront of Australian sport in the lead up to the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Rumble Pro Tour, which kicks off in Adelaide on saturday, will take on even more importance.

KommunityTV will exclusively live stream the action from the Southern Rumble street event in Adelaide’s western suburbs.

Preview: Best young skateboarders ready to Rumble

The best young skateboarders are expected to mix it up in the first event of the season, which is into its second year on the Rumble Pro Tour calendar.

South Australian native Bohdi Smith is one of the fastest rising stars in the sport and will be a key contender at the event, while he will go toe-to-toe with Queensland raiders Yo Wuoti and Taj Branch, fresh off his first challenge at the World Street Championships in Japan last month.

Adding to the excitement of the first event of the season is the recent announcement that the Rumble Tour events would be officially sanctioned by Skate Australia, the governing body for the sport down under.

“It is very exciting for us and has been a long time coming,” The Rumble’s Donny Fraser said.

“It helps open the door for a lot of young skateboarders to compete at the Olympics and other high levels. We want to make sure there is a pathway there for these young athletes.”

Skate Australia is expected to launch a points ranking system in time for qualification for the next Olympics in Los Angeles 2028, with Skate Rumble results now going towards those all-important rankings.

Yo Wuoti will be in Adelaide this weekend.

While it won’t take effect in time for the Paris Olympics later this year, Fraser said he hoped it would encourage more athletes to travel to multiple tour events across the year.

KommunityTV’s exclusive coverage of the Southern Rumble follows on from our live streams of the Western Rumble, Eastern Rumble and Rumble on the Reef National Finals in 2023.

The tight and technical course at Christie Downs is expected to provide plenty of opportunities of skaters to show off their more technical prowess.

“There is a real mix of obstacles across the course, but a lot of it is not too big so the competitors will need to dig deep into their bag of technical tricks.

“It is what we want to see. We have a mix of different styles throughout the tour, but it is important we give them an opportunity to really test themselves technically. The better skaters will learn to adapt.”
