The two-time Western Border Netball Association best and fairest makes the trip home from Adelaide every week in the hope of being part of a premiership with East Gambier.
Now she is set to show the same regional pride when she lines up for her district at the Netball SA Country Championships next weekend.
From Saturday, June 12, The Advertiser and The Messenger will live stream 101 games from the three-day tournament.
More than 100 regional teams will take part in the event, which will be broadcast exclusively to digital subscribers across four simultaneous streams (see fixture lists below).
Gray, part of South Adelaide’s Netball SA Premier League squad, has been training with the Panthers, before catching a flight or making the 900km round trip to Mount Gambier each week to play for her beloved Bulldogs.
While she might have bit off a bit more than she could chew attempting to play for both, the 21-year-old said not lining up for East Gambier was not an option.
“I’ve been there forever and it would have been a really tough choice not to play,” Gray said.
“East made the finals for the first time in ages about four years ago and since then we’ve been competing up the top.
“So I couldn’t stay away and had to keep playing, because the group we have has been through together all the way.
“(The chance of a premiership) definitely makes the trip a bit easier.”
A flag is on the radar this season for East Gambier, which is undefeated so far.
But in the short term, Gray hoped for more success with Western Border at the Country Championships.
The tournament is SA’s pinnacle event for regional talent, featuring senior, 17 and under, 15 and under, 13 and under, and 11 and under divisions.
“We usually do well, but this year we’ve probably got a bit younger team than in the past with a few new faces,” Gray said.
“I’m confident we’ve got what it takes to win.
“The championships are such a high quality of netball and it’s great because it’s the only real option for country netballers to progress, other than coming to Adelaide.”
This year’s titles, to be held at Netball SA Stadium, are even more special, given the 2020 edition was cancelled as the state grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic.
In The Advertiser’s most ambitious live sports coverage to date, all 26 participating associations will feature in at least one streamed match, giving netball fans the chance to watch the pick of the action from the comfort of their homes.
The live stream of the Netball SA Country Championships runs from June 12-14 with coverage from 9am daily.
