PREVIEW: WESTIES EYEING FRESH SANFLW TALENT

West Adelaide hopes to unearth the next batch of SANFLW stars when its junior ranks are put to the test this Friday.

The Bloods will take a close look at their up-and-coming talent when they take on North Adelaide in the under-14 and under-16 girls on Friday night.

Both matches from the SANFL Development Leagues will be exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV from Richmond, beginning at 5.30pm.

The games will be used as trials by both clubs ahead of the SANFL Intrastate Championships in October, which will also be broadcast live.

West Adelaide women’s football manager Haydn Ward said the club would use Friday night and the October carnival to not only identify talent, but foster a path to the senior ranks.

“We’re looking to make the transition to SANFLW as easy as possible by getting these girls ready, especially our 16s, and is the biggest focus,” Ward said.

“It’s about making sure the structures we’re teaching the girls are put in place and everyone understands their roles come game day.

“And with our 14s, we’re hoping to continue to develop them and look for potential SANFLW players of the future.”

West Adelaide has been one of the women’s football leaders in SA having been one of four inaugural SANFLW clubs alongside North, Glenelg and Norwood.

Ward said having several senior footballers involved in the under-14 and under-16 programs, plus seeing the likes of Keeley Kustermann (Adelaide) and Lily Johnson (Port Adelaide) recently drafted to AFLW, provided inspiration to the young players coming through.

“Despite having a tough season in the seniors last year, we still had two players drafted which is huge,” he said.

“We’re always working on providing that opportunity to girls if their dream is to reach AFLW.”

Friday night’s live streamed matches between West and North begin with the under-14s at 5.30pm, followed by the under-16s at 7pm.

They will be last broadcast Development Leagues fixtures before the live stream of the SANFL Intrastate Championships from October 4-6.

The championships see the SANFL’s eight traditional clubs face off in under-14 and under-16 girls carnivals, together with under-15 boys metro and country divisions.
