PREVIEW: TIGERS EYE SPOT AT CARNIVAL
An exciting class of talented Glenelg female footballers are set to audition for a spot at one of South Australia’s most important junior carnivals.
With the SANFL Intrastate Championships to be held in October, clubs are trialling talent in the Development Leagues as they face the tough task of whittling down squads.
Glenelg will get another look at its under-14 and under-16 girls prospects when they take on Woodville-West Torrens at home on Friday night.
Both matches will be exclusively live streamed by KommunityTV from 7pm.
Glenelg under-16 girls coach Braedon Talbot said the club’s depth meant there were a string of players vying for the hotly contested spots in the final squads.
“There is an enormous amount of talent in SA footy at the moment and this group is really strong down at Glenelg,” said Talbot, who is also a SANFLW assistant coach with the Tigers.
“We’ve got a squad of 65 that we’ll need to cut down to 30.
“The opportunity for development at this level now is really exciting.”
The SANFL Intrastate Championships, which will also be live streamed by KommunityTV in October, see the SANFL’s eight traditional clubs face off in under-14 and under-16 girls carnivals, together with under-15 boys metro and country divisions.
Talbot said it was great to see several Glenelg women’s players – including 2022 SANFLW SANFLW Best and Fairest Jess Bates – involved in coaching the junior sides.
“If we wound the clock back 10 years ago we may have run junior programs that the young girls were involved in, but there was no visible pathway to senior football,” he said.
“Now we do.
“So it’s really important that we get the older girls out because they were once in the position of these girls but their pathway stopped.”
KommunityTV’s coverage of the SANFL Development Leagues matches between Glenelg and the Eagles will begin with the under-14 clash at 7pm, followed by the under-16s at 8.20pm.
Both matches will be exclusively live streamed here.
