Saints stormed into the Cairns Hockey Association A-grade men’s grand final with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Souths on Sunday afternoon.

Saints stormed into the Cairns Hockey Association A-grade men’s grand final with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Souths on Sunday afternoon.

The teams could only be separated by one competition point heading into the last round, after Saints drew with Stingers and Souths defeated Brothers in their Round 8 matches on Saturday night.

Saints opened the scoring through a Ryan Coffey strike in the fifth minute and had to withstand a mountain of immediate pressure as the defending premiers sought to square the ledger.

Both side’s showed why they finished at the top of the ladder with their defensive efforts throughout the match, before a late Saints flurry sealed victory and the minor premiership for the sky blues.

Adam Catalano scored the 44th minute, before Daniel Pittendreigh and Brodie Quirk extended the lead.

Saints will now have the week off, with Souths to meet Stingers in this Saturday’s elimination semi-final.

“Both teams have shown over the last couple of weeks at full strength they’ll definitely be a challenge for us,” said Saints coach Peter Swain.

“We’ve got the opportunity now to rest some of the players that have been carrying injuries and hopefully come out nice and fresh and ready for the big dance.
