The Phantom’s Formguide

(Ranked in order of SuperCoach significance in 2019)

Star midfielder Seb Ross is likely to be St Kilda’s top-scorer in 2019
Star midfielder Seb Ross is likely to be St Kilda’s top-scorer in 2019

Seb Ross (Mid $558,400)

After a huge finish to last season, averaging 125 points in his last six starts, the 25-year-old rates highly again in 2019 and will take some catching as the club’s top scorer.

Jack Steele (Mid $512,600)

The 23-year-old was impressive in his last start — 35 disposals and 140 SuperCoach points — and looks set to become a major player in 2019. Get on.

Nick Hind breaks away in the VFL in 2018.
Nick Hind breaks away in the VFL in 2018.

Nick Hind (Mid $117,300)

Mature-age speedster is firming as a Round 1 starter and is likely to come right into SuperCoach calculations. Having a good preparation.

Dan Hannebery (Mid $326,100)

Resuming in new colours after a disappointing 2018 campaign, which produced 14 starts and his lowest SuperCoach average since 2009. Might need the outing but, if fit, the 27-year-old, can’t be ignored.

Dylan Roberton tackles small-forward Jack Lonie.

Dylan Roberton (Def $297,500)

Fantastic story with the 27-year-old, who averaged 93 points in 2017, resuming after a heart irregularity forced him from the field last year. Plenty of value here.

Jack Billings (Fwd $437,600)

The 23-year-old has threatened for a long time but is yet to command a spot at the top of the field. Capable of far better than 2018 average of 81 suggests and is in the running.

Will Jade Gresham, left, become a full-time midfielder this season?
Will Jade Gresham, left, become a full-time midfielder this season?

Jade Gresham (Fwd $429,600)

Added 13 points to his SuperCoach average last season and is capable of even better this campaign. A definite threat if a midfield move eventuates. Consider.

Blake Acres (Fwd/Mid $480,000)

Can feature on his day as eight scores of 80 or more in his 12 starts in 2019 suggests. Fitness a concern last year but, after a 144-point performance in Round 1, Acres commands respect, especially in the draft format.

Jack Steven, right, at St Kilda training.
Jack Steven, right, at St Kilda training.

Jack Steven (Mid $513,500)

Must be respected after averaging 103 points or more in three of the past six seasons but others have slightly stronger claims at the price in SuperCoach.

Jimmy Webster (Def $472,300)

Big improver last season, adding 16 points to his SuperCoach average after seven scores of 100 or more in his first 10 starts. Rates highly again but run may be hindered by the return of Roberton.

Shane Savage (Def $481,300)

Should be prominent again after averaging 87 points or more in the past two seasons and comes right into calculations with the new kick-in stat ruling.

Hunter Clark (Def $293,500)

Having a great preparation which should see the 19-year-old improve on his first-up effort last season. The smooth-mover can’t be taken lightly.

Dean Kent (Fwd $278,800)

First start as a Saint after struggling for opportunity at the Demons. Kent, who posted two SuperCoach tons in five games last year, can’t be ignored at the price.

Young Saint Ben Long might be set for a breakout year in 2019.
Young Saint Ben Long might be set for a breakout year in 2019.

Ben Long (Fwd $292,600)

Fitness a concern last year but the 21-year-old showed enough to suggest he’s capable of better in 2019. There might be some value here so keep in mind.

Billy Longer (Ruck $260,900)

Resuming after just five starts last season and should get the first crack as the No. 1 ruckman, despite strong competition. Keep in mind.

Jack Sinclair (Mid $422,600)

Failed to build on an impressive 2017 campaign last year, losing six points off his average. Can figure as 15 scores of 88 or more in the past two seasons suggests but there doesn’t look to be enough value at the price.

Paddy McCartin (Fwd $262,200)

After a number of concussion issues, the strong-marking forward is having a good preparation and looks set to improve on career-best average of 48. May need the outing.

Jake Carlise (Def $422,100)

Posted four tons in career-best SuperCoach year but others look better placed at the price.

Captain Jarryn Geary, left, and coach Allan Richardson at training.
Captain Jarryn Geary, left, and coach Allan Richardson at training.

Jarryn Geary (Def $430,800)

Averaged a respectable 79 points per game last year after two seasons in the 60s. The skipper leads from the front but others have much stronger claims in SuperCoach.

Tim Membrey (Fwd $396,300)

Membrey, an important part of the St Kilda forward-line, can feature on his day, as four SuperCoach tons in 2018 suggests, but others have stronger claims.

Josh Bruce (Fwd $268,500)

Resuming after a broken leg ended his 2018 season in July and will be a welcome inclusion for the Saints. Look elsewhere in SuperCoach, though,

Nathan Brown (Def $227,600)

Made 15 starts and averaged 42 points per game last season. Not keen.

MAKING THEIR CASE

Josh Battle (Fwd $232,100) will press his claims as a defender in 2019 while Rowan Marshall (Fwd $341,100) could easily be there in Round l. After being dropped in 2018, experienced duo Luke Dunstan ($437,000 MID) and David Armitage ($423,400 MID) will be fighting for their midfield spot, while Jack Newnes ($356,100 Fwd/mid) might be squeezed out, too. And it might be between Jack Lonie ($343,500 fwd) and Dean Kent for a forward-line spot.

Nick Coffield (Def $286,100) is close while mature-age recruits Robbie Young (Fwd $117,300), Matt Parker (Fwd $117,300), Callum Wilkie (Def $124,900) will get an opportunity.

And highly-rated draftee Max King (Fwd $193,800) might not be far away, either.
