The Phantom’s Formguide

(Ranked in order of SuperCoach significance in 2019)

Star defender Hawthorn defender James Sicily at training.

James Sicily (Def $570,400)

Intercepting defender is as strong in the air as he is by foot. Averaged 105 points per game last season and with Tom Mitchell missing, Sicily will take some catching as Hawthorn’s top scorer.

Will Chad Wingard become a full-time midfielder at the Hawks?
Will Chad Wingard become a full-time midfielder at the Hawks?

Chad Wingard (Fwd/mid $481,100)

Coming off a strong midfield effort in the back-half of 2018, averaging 24 disposals and 103 points per game from Round 12 onwards. Looks set to become a major SuperCoach player if Alastair Clarkson shifts him permanently into the middle. Get on.

Jack Scrimshaw (Def $149,800)

Just four starts to his name after struggling on the Gold Coast. Very talented left-footer looks a perfect fit for Clarkson’s Hawks and should make an early appearance. Plenty of value here.

Jaeger O'Meara, left, will be the main man in the middle for the Hawks this season.
Jaeger O'Meara, left, will be the main man in the middle for the Hawks this season.

Jaeger O’Meara (Mid $503,200)

Becomes the Hawks’ most important midfielder in the absence of Mitchell. Averaged 100 points per game after the bye in 2018 and is capable of even better. Fitness always a slight concern. Consider

Ben McEvoy (Ruck $553,100)

Among the better ruck chances after recording the fourth-highest average of all big men last season. Scores of 135, 102 and 129 in past three starts has the 29-year-old rated highly again.

James Worpel (Fwd/Mid $395,700)

The 20-year-old averaged 88 SuperCoach points and won third-most disposals at the Hawks from Round 18 last season. Comes right into calculation after Mitchell injury. Consider.

Jack Gunston (Fwd $521,400)

Added 10 points to his average after scoring 85 or more in 16 games last season. Commands respect and should be prominent again in 2019.

Luke Breust (Fwd $516,400)

Big SuperCoach improver in 2018, averaging 105 points after the bye and earning All-Australian selection. A definite threat in 2019.

Liam Shiels (Mid $498,600)

Impressive last start – 26 disposals and 124 points – and will need to work even harder in the absence of Mitchell. Others look to have stronger claims in the classic format but Shiels could be a nice SuperCoach draft selection.

Can defender Grant Birchall get his body right in 2019?
Can defender Grant Birchall get his body right in 2019?

Grant Birchall (Def $205,200)

Failed to make a start last season and this campaign has already been interrupted by injury. Plenty of value at the price but very hard to trust.

Isaac Smith (Mid $451,100)

Classy runner can feature but five SuperCoach tons last season doesn’t justify the price. Keep in mind in the draft format.

Daniel Howe (Mid $410,000)

Defensive midfielder posted three SuperCoach tons last season but hard to recommend at the price in 2019.

Shaun Burgoyne (Mid $484,200)

The 36-year-old stayer shows no signs of slowing down, averaging 104 points in his final eight games of 2018. Hard to recommend as a midfielder only but must be respected.

Jarryd Roughead at pre-season training.
Jarryd Roughead at pre-season training.

Jarryd Roughead (Fwd $454,100)

Star Hawk commands respect but his SuperCoach average has fallen in the past five seasons. Look elsewhere, especially after interrupted preparation.

Ricky Henderson (Mid $444,900)

Can figure as 10 scores of 85 or more last season suggests but should only be considered late in SuperCoach draft.

Recruit Tom Scully has started running as he recovers from a badly broken ankle last year.
Recruit Tom Scully has started running as he recovers from a badly broken ankle last year.

Tom Scully (Mid $334,900)

Long way back for new Hawk after nasty ankle injury in 2018 but Scully could figure on return. Wait and see.

Harry Morrison (Fwd/mid $350,000)

Impressive 2018 campaign should see the 20-year-old feature prominently for the Hawks again in 2019. Is capable of better but no value at the price in SuperCoach.

Blake Hardwick (Def $403,400)

Improver last season, adding 11 points to his average. Important part of the Hawks’ back six but hard to recommend in SuperCoach.

Jarmey Impey (Def/fwd $370,600)

Exceeded outside expectations in first year as a Hawk but won’t figure in SuperCoach at the price this season.

Paul Puopolo (Fwd $359,500)

Role player can feature on his day but others much better placed in 2019.

James Frawley (Def $364,600)

SuperCoach is not the veteran defender’s thing. Ignore.

Ben Stratton (Def $320,300)

Reliable defender but no value in SuperCoach. Look elsewhere.

MAKING THEIR CASE

Expect to see James Cousins (Mid $219,900), Connor Nash (Fwd $262,200), Conor Glass (Def $210,100) and Teia Miles (Def $343,400) pushing for selection from the outset, while third-year forward Mitch Lewis (Fwd $149,000) could take a big step forward.
