The Phantom’s Formguide

(Ranked in order of SuperCoach significance in 2019)

Recruit Anthony Miles should flourish with more opportunity in the Gold Coast midfield.
Recruit Anthony Miles should flourish with more opportunity in the Gold Coast midfield.

Anthony Miles (Mid $342,000)

Tallied at least 20 disposals in 51 of his 71 senior games at the Tigers and looks a major SuperCoach player with greater opportunity in the Gold Coast midfield in 2019. Get on.

Sam Collins (Def $189,900)

Resuming in the competition after 14 starts with the Dockers in 2016 and 2017. Took the most contested marks ever recorded in a single season in the VFL last year and will slot straight into the Suns’ defence. Must be included.

Draftee Izak Rankine should have no trouble stepping up to AFL footy.
Draftee Izak Rankine should have no trouble stepping up to AFL footy.

Izak Rankine (Fwd $198,300)

Should have no problem stepping up a grade and should feature heavily in debut season. Can – and will – impact with limited possession. A threat.

Josh Corbett (Fwd $123,900)

Won the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL’s most-promising young talent in 2018 – Bayley Fritsch was the previous winner – and should get an early start in the Suns forward line. Should prominent in SuperCoach.

David Swallow (Mid $487,500)

SuperCoach star on his day, who averaged 103 points in breakout 2014 season. Looks to be over injury concerns after playing 20 games last season. Some value at the price but he might be more relevant in the draft format.

Jarrod Witts (Ruck $480,900)

Must be respected despite losing five points off his average last season. Can’t be taken lightly and might come into calculations given the price of top-ranked ruckmen.

Expect Ben Ainsworth to spend more time in the midfield in 2019.
Expect Ben Ainsworth to spend more time in the midfield in 2019.

Ben Ainsworth (Fwd $333,200)

Averaged 90 points over five-game stretch between rounds eight and 12 last season. Fitter and should be an improver with even more midfield time in 2019. Awkward price but do not dismiss.

Pearce Hanley (Def $296,400)

Resuming after just three starts in 2018. Hard to trust given injury-plagued history but can feature on his day. There could be some value here.

Jack Martin (Fwd/mid $439,000)

Equally effective as a forward as he is a playmaking defender. But a permanent midfield role would see a big improvement in scoring. Plenty of value here if that does eventuate. Keep in mind.

Touk Miller (Mid $482,400)

Added 13 points to his average after posting nine SuperCoach tons in 2019. Could improve again and is better than last start – 67 points in Round 23 – suggests. Keep in mind in SuperCoach draft.

Lachie Weller (Def/mid $403,900)

Only marginal improvement in his first year as a Sun but capable of much better this campaign. Do not dismiss as dual-position prospect.

Will Brodie (Mid $369,800)

Made to wait for a start last season but showed enough to warrant early selection in 2019. Excluding injury-affected game in Round 21, the inside midfielder won at least 23 disposals and 11 contested possessions in four his final five matches. Outside chance.

Jack Bowes is a young Sun on the rise.
Jack Bowes is a young Sun on the rise.

Jack Bowes (Mid $348,100)

Impressive in past three starts, averaging 23 disposals, five marks and 92 SuperCoach points. Future prospect but hard to recommend at the price in 2019, despite a likely spike.

Brayden Fiorini (Mid $442,400)

Looking to build on impressive finish to 2019 – two SuperCoach tons in final three rounds – and should do so if given the chance. Always been a threat.

Jack Lukosius (Fwd $202,800)

Likely to be a SuperCoach star in time but, while he should see plenty of action in his first season, the top draft pick is unlikely to feature prominently. Other rookies have stronger claims.

Peter Wright (Fwd $306,400)

The 203cm forward, who is resuming after injury-interrupted year, will be the main man after the departure of Tom Lynch. Scores of 97 and 103 in his final three games for the year suggest he can figure.

Jarrod Harbrow (Def $444,400)

Can feature on his day – as nine scores of 90 or more last season suggests – but not a lot of value in his selection at the price.

A bulked-up Callum Ah Chee during the pre-season.
A bulked-up Callum Ah Chee during the pre-season.

Callum Ah Chee (Def/fwd $300,500)

Has failed to average more than 60 points per game in his first three years but, after showing enough in the back-half of 2019, the exciting talent should be an improver in 2019. Others have stronger claims at the price, however.

Alex Sexton (Fwd $329,700)

Plays a role for the Suns but his scoring is too inconsistent to be considered in SuperCoach. Look elsewhere.

Sam Day (Fwd $301,700)

Yet to reach heights expected of him but will need to improve without Lynch in the forward line. Doesn’t rate highly in SuperCoach.

Jack Hombsch (Def $275,700)

Out-of-favour defender should get an early look at his new club after crossing from the Power. But look elsewhere in SuperCoach.

Rory Thompson (Def $265,400)

Not keen. SuperCoach isn’t his thing.

MAKING THEIR CASE

Expect to see the mature-age Chris Burgess (Def/fwd $123,900) in the frame for Round 1 selection, as well as recruits George Horlin-Smith (Mid $270,300) and Corey Ellis (Def/mid $233,300). Aaron Young (Fwd $325,700) and Jesse Joyce (Def $324,900) would be unlucky to miss out after consistent 2018 campaigns.
