NT Police Northern Watch Commander Len Turner said the man, 40, had managed to remove his electronic monitoring device and attempted to escape police.

“We had a 40-year-old male, who had been on bail for armed robbery. He removed his electronic monitoring device on the 27th of December, thereby breaching his bail conditions,” he said.

“While at large it is alleged he has committed further offences, and for the last few days he’s been avoiding police by hiding out at scrub land in the Howard Springs and Palmerston areas.”

Cmdr Turner said on Sunday evening the man emerged from the bushland disorientated and rang police and St John’s for help using a false name.

“Police attended but were too smart for him and realised who he was. He was placed into custody and is now at Royal Darwin Hospital being treated for the harsh conditions that he subjected himself to,” he said.

“It’s most likely he will face court today or tomorrow and remains under police guard at the RDH.
