One Glenelg North development approved, one knocked back
Aldi will open a store in Glenelg North but a developer who wanted to add an extra level to an apartment complex around the corner was knocked back by the state’s planning panel.

An Aldi supermarket will be built at Glenelg North after it was approved by the State Government’s development panel.
The State Commission Assessment Panel on Thursday gave the green light to Polites Developments to build the $7.4 million supermarket at the corner of Anzac Highway and Old Tapleys Hill Rd.
It will replace 11 existing shops on the 3490sq m site, which is owned by developer Marcus Polites – grandson of late Adelaide property mogul Con Polites.
The new Aldi store will be elevated to allow for street-level parking underneath.
Since opening its first store in South Australia in 2016, Aldi’s presence has grown to 32 supermarkets.
The closest to Glenelg North are at Oaklands Park and Adelaide Airport.
Meanwhile, the panel knocked back a plan to add an extra level to a proposed waterfront apartment development around the corner.
Barrio Developments had applied to add an extra four apartments and a second driveway lane to the development at 22-23 Adelphi Terrace.
It also wanted to build a common room and deck on the extra level.
If approved, this would have taken the height of the building to seven storeys and 23.4m – 4m higher than indicated in the original plans.
In rejecting the proposal, the panel noted that it exceeded the maximum height defined for Adelphi Terrace and that the development would “reduce the overall public realm and streetscape”.
The Barrio development was first knocked back in 2018, in part because of its height exceeding the limit for the area, but it was given approval earlier this year after alternations to the plans.
However, the latest proposal – adding an extra level – led to another rejection.
