Plans for Aldi at Glenelg North lodged with SCAP

Most people would know the Polites family for the many buildings around Adelaide on which their name is plastered — but they could soon bring an Aldi supermarket to Glenelg.

Prominent Adelaide property firm Polites Developments – run by the grandson of late property mogul Con Polites – has lodged plans to knock over corner shops at Glenelg North and build an Aldi supermarket.

The $7.4 million development at the corner of Anzac Highway and Old Tapleys Hill Rd, lodged with the State Government’s State Commission Assessment Panel, would involve razing 11 existing tenancies.

Developer Marcus Polites is the owner of Polites Developments and the Anzac Highway site.

Under the plans, the new supermarket would be elevated to allow for above-ground parking underneath the building at the 3,490sq m site.

According to a report prepared by planning firm Ekistics, the Anzac Highway property was chosen because there were no sites large enough for a new supermarket in Glenelg’s district centre or any other non-residential zones in the area.

The development — which is currently out for public consultation — has been listed as a ‘category 2’ because it is in a mixed use zone, meaning only nearby landowners were notified of the application.

The nearest Aldi stores are at Oaklands Park at Adelaide Airport.

Since opening its first store in South Australia in 2016, Aldi has grown to 31 supermarkets.

Late property tycoon Con Polites amassed a portfolio of more than 50 Adelaide CBD buildings, and a smattering of suburban holdings, before his death in 2001.

The plans are out for public consultation until Friday, September 27.
