What happens after a sexual assault?

A talented footballer continued his sickening assault on a young teenage girl, despite her pleas for him to stop.

Angus David McInnis, 21, was jailed for his “predatory, forceful and persistent” behaviour, which left the victim blaming herself.

During sentencing on Tuesday, the District Court heard McInnis was 19 when he met the 14-year-old victim through a mutual friend and began talking to her on Snapchat.

The court heard McInnis picked up the victim March 2021 at Port Pirie, before “aggressively” kissing her and exposing himself to her – which were uncharged acts.

After driving some more, McInnis again pulled the car over and undid the victim’s jeans, before sexually assaulting her.

“She felt uncomfortable and asked you to stop, you ignored her and continued,” Judge Michael Durrant said.

A victim impact statement was read to the District Court last month by prosecutor Georgina Nicholson.

“My first reaction was blaming myself, I blamed myself for it every day,” the victim said.

“I trusted him and he didn’t do the right thing.”

The victim said she felt embarrassed, ashamed and alone because of McInnis’ offending.

“I don’t like wearing shorts or skirts anymore and don’t wear jeans as much because I remember him saying that’s part of why he did it,” she said.

The victim said some people at her school blamed her for what she had been wearing and telling her she must have been giving out “mixed signals”.

“I hope Angus realises that he’s ruined my life because of what he did,” she said.

McInnis, of Port Augusta, pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse.

Sally Burgess, for McInnis, previously told the court he excelled in sports from a young age.

McInnis played SAPSASA football and cricket and was part of the B-grade Spencer Gulf Football League premiership team in 2019.

The court heard McInnis, who had worked at McDonalds and in traffic management,

was a father to a young daughter.

The court heard McInnis had since gained insight into his behaviour and how to appropriately treat women.

Judge Durrant sentenced McInnis to one year and nine months jail, with a non-parole period of 12 months.

“You took advantage of a young person and the age difference between you and the victim was significant,” he said.

“Your conduct was predatory, forceful and persistent – you disregarded her wishes when she said no.”

The sentence was backdated to July 6, 2021, meaning McInnis is eligible for parole.
