Jessie Black jailed for three years for violent home invasion and robbery

Fuelled by drugs, a woman and three accomplices pointed a gun at a ‘terrified’ homeowner’s head, trapped him in the bathroom, and fled with $100,000 of goods.

A young mother will be away from her three children for at least 18 months for her role in a “terrifying” home invasion over a drug debt.

Jessie Black, 26, and her accomplices left the homeowner feeling “helpless” during the armed robbery.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Black, Allan Deer and two unidentified co-offender broke into Asad Hussaimi’s Edinburgh North home on August 9, 2020.

Mr Asad woke up to someone screaming at him.

“Mr Deer yelled out to him ‘Hands up. Don’t move’, while holding a metal pole above his head,” Judge Joana Fuller said.

The court heard Black was wielding a wooden stick, while one of the unidentified offenders pointed a pistol at Mr Asad.

Mr Asad was taken to the toilet, with one of the offenders pushing a fridge in front of the door.

The court heard Mr Asad managed to push the fridge away and run, but he was grabbed by Deer.

Mr Asad pushed Deer, who fell over, and he escaped and ran down the street.

The court heard the group stole a Hino truck and truck parts, which were valued at $102,000.

Judge Fuller said Mr Asad’s mental health was destroyed by the offending and he had to sleep in his car for a couple of months.

The Salisbury mother-of-three pleaded guilty to serious criminal trespass and robbery.

Deer was sentenced in October to three years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of one year and 11 months.

The court heard Black had written a letter of apology to Mr Asad and was genuinely ashamed and distressed by her actions.

Judge Fuller said she accepted Black wasn’t the mastermind behind the offending.

“Mr Deer was sentenced on the basis that he had a drug debt and was told by those to whom he owed money to steal a specific truck at a specific address and that if he did not, they knew where his family lived,” she said.

“You were associating with Mr Deer and taking drugs and you agreed to be part of this criminal enterprise with two others.”

Judge Fuller said a person’s home should be a safe place and sanctuary.

“The violation of that security and sanctity will inevitably be traumatic to the occupier, and in this case it was terrifying to Mr Asad to be confronted as he was by armed intruders,” she said.

Judge Fuller sentenced Black to three years and five months jail, with a non-parole period of 18 months.

“I hope the incentive of the children you have and the family that are here to support you will make the time pass quickly,” she said.
