Paul Jay speaks out about the Thaxted Park Golf Course housing development

Paul Jay says he wouldn’t have bought his golf course home at Woodcroft if he knew the view would eventually be blocked off by 100 new two-storey homes on his doorstep.

The secret life in trees

A Woodcroft resident who will be significantly impacted by the Thaxted Park Golf Course’s new housing development has called the situation a ‘nightmare’.

Paul Jay, 65, bought his home on Golf Course Drive a little over two years ago and says he never would have purchased the property if he knew of the development plans.

“We had just signed the contract and I thought of giving the area a Google when I found the first set of plans,” Mr Jay said.

“By then it was too late, it’s a nightmare.”

Mr Jay’s backyard looks directly onto the fairway, something he knows he’s not ‘entitled to’, but says it would be devastating for the area to lose its tranquillity.

“It comes down the privacy of those already living here, many of us bought for the reason we had this view on our backdoor step, now we are faced with possibly a hundred-odd two storey homes on our doorstops.”

Residents are condemning Onkaparinga Council’s latest code amendment for Thaxted Park Golf Club, which would allow approximately 140 two-storey homes to be built across two sites.

The affected areas comprises a total of 7.08ha of land accommodating several fairways associated with the golf course and areas of mature vegetation.

Area one (3.16ha) is located on the northwestern corner of the golf course while area two (3.92ha) is located on the southwestern corner of the golf course.

They say the site for area one will not be able to cope with additional traffic from the proposed homes.

“The road’s not designed for that amount of traffic to go through, it will cause a huge traffic hazard, it’s already very dangerous,” Mr Jay said.

“They are proposing the emergency access point to be further down in a creek bed.

“We have no doubt that people being people, that both the people living in area one as well as people living in the northern areas of Woodcroft will use these emergency access points to access their residences, thereby avoiding the intersection of Bains and Patatalinga Roads, as well to access Patatalinga Road going the other way.

“Once they take a small part of the land, where do you draw the line of taking more? Are we even going to have a golf course in 10 years?”

A Creation Homes spokesman said they were happy to work with concerned residents and find a compromise for the sites once they have all the necessary feedback.
