Housing proposed for Thaxted Park Golf Course’s 17th and 18th fairways

A proposal to sell parts of a popular golf course for homes has been met with hostility by residents, who say it would destroy the entire reason they live there. See the plans.

Furious residents say a plan for hundreds of homes on the back of a popular suburban golf course will ruin their quiet area.

Woodcroft residents are condemning Onkaparinga Council’s latest code amendment for Thaxted Park Golf Club, which would allow approximately 140 two-storey homes to be built across two sites.

The main concerns lay with area one – where around 60 homes would go – with residents saying the roads can’t handle more traffic, nor do they want their view destroyed.

“We’re all going to lose our beautiful golf-course views, residents are going to lose their quiet enjoyment of their property,” local resident Paul Jay said.

“We understand developments happen and people need houses to live in but 60-plus houses on that one site equates to 120 cars coming through the street.”

The affected areas comprises a total of 7.08ha of land accommodating several fairways associated with the golf course and areas of mature vegetation.

Area one (3.16ha) is located on the northwestern corner of the golf course while area two (3.92ha) is located on the southwestern corner of the golf course.

The allotment yield assumes an average allotment size of approximately 300m2 and a residential density of 20 dwellings per hectare

The only access point into the area one would be from Morningside Drive, something Mr Jay said would be a hazard.

“It’s currently a cul-de-sac, the access point would have to go right through a dry creek bed, up on to the fairway.

“The road’s not designed for that amount of traffic to go through, it will cause a huge traffic hazard, it’s already very dangerous.”

A Creation Homes spokesman said they were happy to work with concerned residents and find a compromise.

“We will take the information from community consultation and feedback, consider it and see where there are opportunities to compromise and try to appease some the concerns,” said the spokesman.

“We will scatter all the information, we don’t know what we will end up with until we get all the feedback. It may end up that we proceed with area two and not one.”

Public consultation closes Monday August 29.
