Ascot Park man faces court charged over alleged Edwardstown murder

The man accused of carrying out a chilling suburban murder in which a father was shot in the chest and left to die in the street has faced court – but he cannot be identified.

The Advertiser/7NEWS Adelaide: Tuesday, December 13, 2022

The man accused of a chilling suburban murder on Sunday night has faced court, but a suppression has been placed on his name and he cannot be identified.

The man, 44, on Tuesday afternoon appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court charged with murder, where a police prosecutor applied to suppress his details.

The Ascot Park man, who was wanted for more than 24 hours over the alleged suburban murder of Glenn Michael Holton, made no application for bail.

In making no application for bail, no details of what police will allege about what happened on Sunday night were detailed, and secrecy took hold over the allegations.

Magistrate Paul Foley granted an interim suppression order on the man’s name, image and identity.

In doing so he rejected a media application to identify him based on the significant public interest in the matter.

Police prosecutor Grant Watterson said the suppression was required given an investigation was ongoing, and his name and image could prejudice the course of that investigation.

“The matter is still subject to an ongoing investigation which is reasonably complex,” he said.

“Identification could be an issue in this matter.

“There are a large number of witnesses to be spoken to, statements to be taken and evidence seized.”

Police will allege the man shot 41-year-old Kangarilla father Mr Holton in the chest and left him to die in the middle of Dunorlan Road at Edwardstown.

Mr Holton was rushed to the Flinders Medical Centre in a critical condition but was pronounced deceased a short time later.

He has since been remembered by his friends and brother as a “sensitive and caring” man.

After the alleged shooting, the man was on the run from police for more than 24 hours before being arrested on Monday night.

Police say the man was arrested at a Park Holme home about 11pm.

They say Mr Holton and the man were known to each other.

He will next face court in April.

A hearing on the continued suppression of his name and image will take place later this week where The Advertiser will argue it is in the public interest for his name to be known.

Police say they are continuing to investigation the circumstances of the alleged murder and are seeking public assistance.

They have released CCTV footage of three vehicles, the drivers of which they believe may have “important information that could assist the investigation”.

“Those drivers potentially saw the victim, a man riding a pushbike and possibly a third person in the street,” they said.
