Brendan Nazer found with child abuse material after avoiding prison over almost identical offending

Despite narrowly escaping jail for identical crimes, a convicted child sex offender has told a court he continued to seek out disgusting photos of children being exploited.

What happens when you are charged with a crime?

Exposed as a child-sex offender at just 20, a serial pervert – who worked at a supermarket while registered as an offender – has admitted to again being caught with child abuse imagery.

Brendan Nazer, now 21, on Thursday pleaded guilty to four counts of possessing child exploitation material, with two of those charges relating to children under the age of 14.

And despite his continued possession of the vile images, a psychologist report on Nazer from 2021 indicated he had “no sexual interest in children”.

The pleas came 18 months after he pleaded guilty to having another 25 child abuse videos on his phone, which occurred while he was on the Australian National Child Offender Register.

Nazer, who was working at Coles, was arrested in July and faced court in his work uniform where he was denied bail and remanded behind bars – where he has remained.

After escaping prison for his first lot of offending, and instead landing himself a two-year-and-one-month suspended sentence, Nazer, of Salisbury East, will wait until February to learn if he will spend any longer in prison.

The former fast food manager began working at Coles as a night-fill worker while serving the suspended sentence handed to him in May last year – something that sparked condemnation from workers’ union state secretary Josh Peak.

During an earlier bail application police prosecutor John Taliangis told the court officers conducted an Australian National Child Sex Offenders Registry compliance check when they found a USB with the exploitation material on it.

“Police examined the device … and identified a number of files depicting sexual activity involving children under and over 14 years of age,” Mr Taliangis said.

Following his July arrest, police discovered further exploitative material on his phone.

Nazer’s conviction last year, on two counts of possessing child exploitation material, both aggravated, came as part of an international sting targeting an online cloud storage app.

He will next be sentenced next year.
