Collectors, producers and distributors of some of the most abhorrent child-abuse material police have ever seen were bought down by their use of an online cloud storage app.

On Wednesday, the Australia Federal Police concluded Operation Molto, a two-year international initiative targeting purveyors of child exploitation material.

The Advertiser can reveal the identities of 11 South Australian men who were arrested, charged and, in some cases, jailed for their offending.

In one case, the child-exploitation material found on a man’s phone led police to discover he was abusing his own three-year-old child.

That man, who cannot be named to protect his victim, was jailed for more than 14 years for his crimes.

In several other cases, the investigation into child exploitation material led police to other images which had been filmed by the offenders themselves.

Operation Molto was launched in 2019 after the New Zealand Te Tari Taiwhenua Department of Internal Affairs identified thousands of offenders were using an online cloud storage platform to share child exploitation material.

The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation has since removed 51 children from potential harm at the hands of these men.

Some of the offenders in Australia were found in possession of images linked to Operation Niro, a 2015 international task force which dismantled a global paedophile ring.

The material made by those offenders was classified by the AFP as “the most abhorrent produced” and continues to be found in the collections of offenders from across the world.

The Operation was known locally as Operation H and included arrests from around the world.

AFP Assistant Commissioner Lesa Gale said “viewing, distributing or producing child abuse material is a horrific crime”.

“Children are not commodities and the AFP and its partner agencies work around-the-clock to identify and prosecute offenders.”

Richard Perrey

A Barossa man caught with more than 300 videos he filmed of children playing outside.

Police also found screen shots and videos Perrey had filmed of live streamed shows online featuring underage girls.

The offending lasted at least one year and ten months.

During sentencing, District Court Judge Liesl Kudelka said Perrey had sent messages encouraging the girls to commit sexual acts.

The live streaming service allows for multiple people to witness the abuse as it happened live.

“It is abhorrent that children are being exploited in this way,” Judge Kudelka said.

The father of several of the children told the court he felt devastated at the invasion of privacy and guilty that other children had come to his house and been filmed in the same way.

Perrey was sentenced to five years in prison with a non-parole period of two years and six months.

The sentence was backdated to Perrey’s arrest in August 2020.

Tregloan, a children’s app creator, apologised to his victims in court.

He was sentenced to 16 months for the child abuse material and 18 months for the indecent filming with a non-parole period of nine months.

Judge Joana Fuller ordered that Tregloan serve the sentence on home detention bail and urged him to seek treatment.
