Brendan Nazer charged with possessing child exploitation material

Just 14 months after escaping jail despite possessing child sex abuse material, a 21-year-old Coles worker has been charged over almost identical alleged offending.

A 21-year-old Coles worker charged with possessing child sex abuse material avoided prison time just 14 months ago after being found guilty of almost identical allegations.

Brendan Nazer on Monday faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court from custody, still wearing his Coles uniform, on three charges of possessing child exploitation material, one of them relating to a child under 14-years-old.

The court heard Nazer, of Salisbury East, was working at Coles as a night-fill worker while serving the two-year and one month suspended sentence handed to him in May last year.

Police prosecutor John Taliangis told the court officers conducted an Australian National Child Sex Offenders Registry compliance check on Saturday when they found a USB allegedly with child exploitation material on it.

“Police examined the device … and identified a number of files depicting sexual activity involving children under and over 14 years of age,” Mr Taliangis said.

Mr Taliangis told the court police then arrested Nazer at Salisbury Park and allegedly found further exploitative material on his phone.

Nazer was convicted on two counts of possessing child exploitation material, both aggravated, on May 21 last year as part of an international sting targeting an online cloud storage app.

Duty solicitor Imogen Noble, for Nazer, applied for bail based on Nazer’s age, likelihood he would contest the charges and an “incredibly traumatic” childhood.

Magistrate Christopher Smolicz said Nazer’s fresh allegations were “too serious” to consider allowing him into the community on bail.

“What makes this (alleged) offending most serious is that you have been previously convicted … it is extremely concerning,” Mr Smolicz said.

“I’m not satisfied that if bail was granted that you would cease offending given your relevant prior criminal history, which is very recent … it’s just too serious.”

Nazer was remanded to reappear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in December.
