A father has been jailed for throwing a table from the ninth floor of an Adelaide CBD medi-hotel in a “potentially dangerous” act.

Jaye Dean James, 39, was hungry and frustrated when he left his room while Covid-19 positive.

A police prosecutor told the court James was given the direction to quarantine in his Tom’s Court medi-hotel room on January 19.

James exited his hotel room without permission on January 22 and was directed to return.

“After returning to his hotel room he has picked up a table and thrown it out of his ninth floor window,” the police prosecutor said.

The court heard the table landed on the street, damaging it.

James pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday to multiple charges, including breaching a Covid-19 direction and property damage.

Lawyer Aaron Fornarino, for James, told the court he was trying to get the attention of security.

“He was frustrated at the lack of food available at the facility,” he said.

“He understands that his actions were quite reckless to say the least.”

The court heard James, who is a father to two children who live in Whyalla, is remorseful for his actions.

Magistrate Edward Stratton-Smith said he hopes James, who has an “extensive history”, knows he cannot continue to act this way.

“What he did was unacceptable and potentially dangerous,” he said.

Mr Stratton-Smith sentenced James to 10 days jail, with convictions recorded.
