At least five new bike trails will open to the public over the next 12 months in an ongoing push to turn the state into Australia’s premier cycling destination.

A 27km linear bike trail between Murray Bridge and Callington will open to the public on September 12, while work is progressing well on redevelopment of the Fox Creek Mountain Bike Park at Cudlee Creek.

A trail network has also been announced for Yantaringa Reserve in Hahndorf, while construction of two new recreational cycling trails is set to start in Nairne and Littlehampton.

Adelaide Hills Council infrastructure and operations manager Peter Bice said cycling – both as a sport and recreational activity – had been on the rise for a number of years.

The council had spent around $500,000 on cycling infrastructure and maintenance since 2018.

It had also dedicated $35,000 over three years to the growth of the Women’s Tour Down Under.

Mr Bice said the council was currently seeking funding for a $60 million trail network linking Clare with McLaren Vale – the Adelaide Wine Capital project – in a joint venture with five other councils.

“The council is always exploring opportunities to create more varied cycling experiences in the Adelaide Hills and are currently reviewing our cycling and trails strategies,” Mr Bice said.

“The Adelaide Wine Capital project is among a number of exciting propositions, both economically and from a user perspective, as the scale of collaboration across South Australia for a project of this nature is unprecedented.”

South Australia’s mountain biking community is also rallying to transform fire-ravaged trails at Cudlee Creek.

ForestrySA, which is managing the project, said work was well underway to transform Fox Creek into a world-class attraction.

While a reopening date was yet to be announced, ForestrySA chief executive Julian Speed said remediation work on nine beginner and intermediate trails had started.

That included clearing debris, drainage points, and assessing future maintenance tasks.

The strategy also included ideas for trail re-establishment and new trails, day-visitor facilities, improved carparking, traffic management, toilets and a function centre.

“ForestrySA will prepare a site masterplan and detailed concept drawings once funding has been secured,” Mr Speed said.
