As COVID restrictions ease and the new normal starts, the desire to travel and escape remains strong with families choosing a camping holiday.

Since travel restrictions were lifted in May, camping sites have been inundated with visitors from across the State, leaving many unsure about the best places to pitch a tent.

Forestry SA managed camping spots in Mount Crawford and Kuitpo Forests have been in strong demand, with each of the 88 sites fully booked for most of the season.

Ranger Rachel Godoy said months of isolation - as a result of COVID - had prompted a resurgence in interest in camping.

“When our new online booking system was launched on Monday May 25, following the lifting of restrictions, we sold out for the June long weekend in under 45 minutes,” she said. “Our campgrounds have been sold out every weekend since and our accommodation and hut facilities are similarly busy.

“They are also completely sold out this July school holidays and continue to be booked out most weekends of the 2020 camping season.

“So with each site able to accommodate up to 10 people, we could have more than 800 people in the campgrounds at any one time.”

Ms Godoy said with weekend camping in hot demand, she urged locals to book ahead.

“Weekends are booking out up to three weeks in advance and accommodation and hut facilities are booked out at least a month or two ahead, with the more popular venues like Woodcutter’s Cottage booking out on weekends for the entire season,” she said.

“We are well aware of the increasing popularity of our natural environment and are working alongside other government agencies to increase public access opportunities in the future.”
