Hills residents will soon have access to two new cycle paths, as Mount Barker Council seeks to expand its trail network.

The council has identified The Childs Road Trail, between the South-Eastern Freeway and Hallett Rd in Littlehampton, and Byethorne Park to Lower Nixon St, in Nairne, as priority projects.

It will spend $265,000 creating the paths, but hopes to secure more than $80,000 in State Government grants to offset the costs.

Infrastructure general manager Phil Burton said the paths were “obvious and important missing links” between existing networks.

“There are many cyclists in the Adelaide Hills and investment in the network is seeking to further encourage active transport options for our community which will contribute to community wellbeing,” Mr Burton said.

Both projects are hoped to be completed in the next calendar year.

Nairne resident Daniel Wade, who regularly rides with 10-year-old son Jensen, said both bike paths were welcomed additions.

He hoped it would mark the start of a greater cycling network, connecting more Hills towns via bike paths.

“I think it’s great that the council is investing in these trails, especially here in Nairne,” Mr Wade said.

“But I think if we could also connect all the towns together, that would be really good for tourism as well to make the place a bit of a destination for people to come.

“I know that would be a project for a couple of different councils, but it would be great to see them working together to make it happen but bike paths are a good investment.”

The development of the Byethorne Park trail required an agreement with the Australian

Rail Track Corporation and the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, which owned a portion of the land, but the council did not consider that a “high-risk consideration”.
