Thursday night’s Powerball draw carried a $100m jackpot – the game’s biggest prize since 2019 and only the fourth time the prize has topped nine digits in the game’s 26-year history.

But as no one won Division 1, $160m will be up for grabs next week – the biggest lotto jackpot in Australian history.

Up to half of all adult Australians were expected to get a ticket for Thursday night’s draw and a similar number will be hoping for a life-changing win next week.

The major prize has now jackpotted for five weeks in a row but $75.2m in prizes were still handed out in draw 1379, including 15 Division 2 winners who will each receive more than $139,000.

“On the last ($100m jackpot) in September 2019, the peak of sales was at 7.22pm on the day of the draw when more than 7800 tickets were sold in a single minute – that was just minutes before the draw’s close,” said The Lott’s James Eddy.

Two-thirds of this year’s Powerball division one winning entries have been Quick Picks where the lottery terminal randomly chooses the numbers for you, while a quarter have been PowerHit entries that guarantee the Powerball number.

On September 8, a South Australian mum from Snowtown scooped the last major Powerball jackpot, worth $40m.

And at the start of this month a Victorian player won $50m in Oz Lotto – a Cranbourne mum who said it left her “shaking like a leaf”.

Before that, a Powerball draw in June gave the sole winner from Canberra a prize exceeding $60.7m.
