We’re all struggling with cost of living pressures but millions of Aussies were crossing their fingers tonight and hoping for a massive unexpected windfall. And one got incredibly lucky.
The Powerball jackpot soared to $60m, the third-highest lotto prize of the year so far.
The winning numbers were 22, 6, 1, 16, 17, 29 and 11. The Powerball was 2.
There was a single Division 1 winner from Canberra who scooped a prize exceeding $60.7m and is now among the biggest lottery winners in Australian history
“I’m laughing. I’m lost for words. I’m pacing around,” he told officials from The Lott when they contacted him.
“I can’t believe it. I’m going to have a heart attack. You know what – I had a feeling it was The Lott calling me! I thought, ‘They’re going to call me at 8.30pm tonight’. Wow! Wow! Wow!”
He said he was a dad and planned to retire immediately and treat his family to a lifestyle they could not have dreamed of.
Nine Powerball division one winning entries across Australia have collectively taken home more than $311.2 million in 2022.
“Australia’s biggest lottery winner of 2022 so far is a Coffs Harbour man who wanted to park a new red sports car in the garage of a new house after we confirmed he’d won more than $63.3 million in a February Powerball draw,” said The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart.
“Interestingly, New South Wales players have enjoyed a stellar start to 2022, scoring five of the year’s nine Powerball division one wins to date.”
If you didn’t strike it big don’t be disheartened, the odds of winning the Powerball division one jackpot with a single game are a mere one in 134,490,400.
In 2019, a Sydney nurse became Australia’s current individual lottery record-holder when she won $107,575,649.
She continues to work and says her philosophy has been to “pay it forward” and support causes she’s passionate about – as well as enjoying a more luxurious life.
A $150m Powerball jackpot in 2019 was the biggest in Australian history, but it was shared among three winners.
Powerball is drawn from two barrels. Seven numbers are drawn from the main barrel with balls numbered 1-35, and one Powerball is drawn from a pool of numbers 1-20.
You can cut your odds by buying a PowerHit entry, which guarantees you get the Powerball number, but that of course costs a lot more for a ticket. Around half the division one winning entries in Powerball are from a PowerHit ticket.
