A new brewery restaurant has opened in the iconic McLaren Vale house once occupied by historic restaurant, The Barn.
OGRE Tap House brings to life a vision held by local brewer Matt Veide, along with his partner Imogen Mulholland, her brother Sean and father Alan. The crew is also behind popular cafe, Mullygrub, up the road.
“I’ve been brewing for a fair few years now and registered the name about two years ago,” says Matt, who also holds about 15 years’ experience in vineyards.
“We got our licence to sell earlier this year. I thought (the restaurant) would be a bit down the track, but my brother and father-in-law came up with the idea of taking it (The Barn) over so we decided to take it on.”
The opening comes 12 months after The Barn, which was open for 49 years, closed.
Chef Chris Chilvers (The Kitchen Door; Elbow Room) is heading OGRE’s kitchen with an all-day menu covering snacks, lunch and dinner. Dishes range from burgers – both beef and Korean fried chicken – to Port Lincoln mussels with charred tomato and seaweed, and gnocchi with mushroom XO.
Beers on tap include OGRE’s pale, amber and smoked porter along with fellow South Aussie crafts.
Festivity seekers can expect live music on Christmas Eve as well as the following week, and possibly New Year’s Eve.
