It’s all systems Unico Go at Australia’s smallest wine bar, in the heart of Adelaide

With just five seats, Adelaide’s newest bar is also likely Australia’s smallest. Discover Unico Go, if you can find a spot.

It’s a small space but demand is huge for a sitting at Adelaide’s newest bar, Unico Go. With just five seats available, it’s being hailed as the smallest wine bar in Australia.

The intimate hangout is the handiwork of Brendan and Laura Carter of Unico Zelo wines and Applewood Distillery in Gumeracha. Located at the rear of Rundle St bar BRKLYN, the “tiny” bar has transformed what was formerly a recording booth.

“After checking it out, we went to the Exeter Hotel for a few beers and came up with the idea of a tiny bar,” Mr Ward says. “It’s a completely creative platform.”

‘Go’ means ‘five’ in Japanese – and so came the name for the five-seater. The space is a fitting location for a wine brand devoted to creativity and connection – in and out of the glass. Unico Zelo won the 2021 Best of Wine Tourism Award for ‘Innovative Wine Tourism Experience’ for ‘Wine For The People’ – the daily live streamed happy hour they produced when COVID lockdowns hit Australia.

They will record and live stream their new Wine for the People series from the CBD location. People can also virtually prop up the bar. The experience will be live streamed every night via social media platform Twitch. Viewers from all over the world can tune in to ask questions of the sommeliers.

Guest sommeliers such as former d’Arenberg Restaurant beverage guru Josh Picken will curate the global wine list.

“The current vibe from Josh (who is Simply Red obsessed) is all red wine,” Mr Ward says. “Guests will also include wine industry folk and winemaker takeovers.”

One non-wine option will be available each week.

“Brendan is stepping up behind the bar next week so he might choose XXXX Gold. If you want a unique, fun wine experience, that’s what we’re there for. We’re located within BRKLYN and they do great cocktails so we don’t want to take away from that.”

Sittings are set to a one-hour time limit and happen from 6pm to 10pm from Thursday to Sunday. “Time for one of two glasses of wine.”

A small snack menu by Nashville hot chicken restaurant, Cheekies will also be available.

The bar is open from Thursday to Sunday, 6pm to 10pm. “The 10pm sitting can hang around later if they want to,” Mr Ward says.

With such limited space to perch one’s posterior, punters have to be quick to secure a spot.

“The response has been unbelievable. We’ve already got bookings all the way through till Easter.” Book at unicozelo.com.au /pages/unico-go
