There’s a movement happening across the globe and in the glass.
A new generation of health conscious drinkers want all the fun, flavour and conviviality – without the alcohol. And they’re spurring a wave of new businesses.
Here in Adelaide, Don’t Mock Me founders Lisa Kahmann and Michael Cane identified a gap in the market for a mobile mocktail bar. They launched their business in November, sparked by a social media post Ms Kahmann spotted on Instagram.
“A young lady in America was talking about being at a wedding,” Ms Kahmann said. “She went to the bar and asked for something non-alcoholic to drink – like a juice in a Champagne glass. They told her to go to the kid’s area. She was a recovering alcoholic.”
It was enough set the mobile mocktail van cogs turning.
“There seemed to be a need for it. We did some research and there wasn’t even a franchise to buy. No one was tapping into that market so we did it ourselves.”
The van appears at Aldinga Beach, markets, concerts, baby showers and weddings.
They serve classic cocktails made using Australian-made zero-alcohol products. Think
non-alcoholic gin and tonics, espresso martinis, mai tais, the old fashioned, and a 100 per cent organic vegan pina colada.
Location updates are posted to social media.
“We’re not anti-alcohol,” Ms Kahmann said. “There is a generation coming where alcohol is not their first choice.”
