Pony and Cole cafe in Hindmarsh awarded best breakfast in Australia

A cafe in Adelaide’s inner suburbs is the place to go for 2023’s best breakfast in Australia. Find out what makes them tops, and see SA’s other national winners.

A cafe in Hindmarsh has put Adelaide on the national breakfast map by taking out the title of 2023’s Best Breakfast in Australia at the Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence.

Pony and Cole is known for its innovative and diverse menu, which includes anything from a hearty big breakfast to Hawaiian French toast.

Executive chef Nicolle Hahn accepted the gong, presented at a ceremony in Sydney on Monday night.

The cafe was one of seven national awards secured by South Australian venues.

Other winners included Burger Incredible in Unley (Burger Bar), Bocelli Caffe Ristorante in Adelaide (Family Dining), d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant in McLaren Vale (Restaurant in a Winery) and Mayura Station’s The Tasting Room in Millicent (Steak Restaurant - Formal).

Events at SkyCity Adelaide also picked up two gongs including Function/Convention Centre Caterer and a major prize for Caterer of the Year.

Pony and Cole sous chef Penny Wouters said in her 20 years of cooking, winning the award was “the highlight of my career”.

“We put a lot of love and pride into what we serve here,” Ms Wouters said.

“A lot of our products are made in house, which I think sets our cafe apart from the rest.”

Ms Wouters said when she found out Pony and Cole had won best breakfast, the feeling was “unbelievable”.

“I have to say it was the highlight of my career, the recognition from the awards and the community is unbelievable,” she said.

The cafe took to their Facebook page on Monday night to announce the news.

“Last month we won the 2023 Best Breakfast Restaurant in South Australia … Tonight we are pleased to announce Pony and Cole are the WINNER for the 2023 Best Breakfast in AUSTRALIA!,” the post read.

“Thank you to EVERYONE who has supported Pony and Cole, we could not have done it without you.”
