New Good Neighbour Deli in Adelaide is bringing back the double cut roll

Double cut rolls are back, but so is the debate about whether they should be two cuts or three. Take our poll then see our list of where to find the South Aussie food icon.

It’s a contentious subject: How many cuts are in a double cut roll? Two (double cut) or three (resulting in a double sandwich?)

Whichever way you roll, the South Aussie food icon remains a nostalgic lunch favourite of deli-goers past.

It’s believed the double cut roll dates back to at least the 1930s and the term itself was added to the Australian National Dictionary in 2016. But while the double cut roll is no longer found at every Adelaide “corner shop”, some sandwich bars and cafes are still offering up the goods.

And, now, there’s a new deli that wants to make double cut rolls big again.

Good Neighbour Deli at Lot Fourteen, North Tce, is serving up monster-sized DCRs to appeal to “a new generation”.

“As soon as we started thinking about opening a deli we knew we wanted to include the double cut roll,” said owner Brett Hicks-Maitland. “Then we started talking to friends about the new deli and it was the first thing they requested so we knew we were onto a good thing.

“Having been at school in the 80s and 90s, the double cut was a standard lunch box inclusion – or something you’d grab at the tuckshop if your school was fancy enough.

“We’re hoping to introduce a whole new generation to the wonder of the double cut, plus bring it back for all of those old enough to remember it the first time around.”

But do they go for the double or triple cut?

“There’s some debate about what makes a true double cut roll,” Mr Hicks-Maitland said.

“We’ve gone with what the name implies – the rolls is cut twice with two sets of fillings in one roll.”

Flavour combos at Good Neighbour range from mortadella to their version of the Rueben, and a vego pumpkin and feta number. Pre-orders can be made at goodneighbourdeli.com.au
