South Australians may be bidding farewell to the last dine-in Pizza Hut at the end of this month, but there are still a number of buffets and all-you-can-eat restaurants to check out across the state – and they’re all family-friendly.
From unlimited plates of sushi to bottomless pizza every Monday night, and from kid-friendly pubs to Korean barbecues, here are eight of SA’s top diners where you’ll need to wear your stretchy pants.
NIJUMARU
Shop 50/264 Main North Rd, Prospect
20 Jetty Road, Glenelg
This one is for the sushi lovers. At Nijumaru Japanese Restaurant in Prospect and Glenelg you can get unlimited plates of made-to-order morsels of fresh fish (cooked and raw), chicken teriyaki and okonomiyaki for just $39.50.
Seniors and kids get a discount on that set price: seniors pay $33, for kids under 12 it’s $18 and for kids under nine it’s $12 – and kids under three eat for free.
With more than 50 plates to choose from, there’s bound to be something to suit all tastes. There’s a 90-minutes window to eat what you can and the restaurant doesn’t tolerate wastage – there’s a charge for leftover food, starting from $10.
A comprehensive drinks list includes sake, beer, spirits and wine, or diners can BYO for $15 per bottle.
CHARLIE’S DINER
466 Brighton Road, Brighton
The newly revamped Brighton Metro has cemented itself as a community favourite once again, with its all-you-can-eat buffet starting from $25.95 per adult. The fresh-look buffet boasts a range of dishes, from calamari to roasts and bountiful salads.
Prices vary according to the day of the week, ranging from $25.95 to $35.95. Hot tip: head in for lunch on Monday through Thursday to save your bucks!
Kids aged five to 12 pay $16.95 for a meal, while seniors pay $18.95-19.95 for lunch and $26.95 dinner.
It’s free for kids aged four and under, and on Mondays and Tuesdays kids under 12 eat free.
ANCHOVY BANDIT
96 Prospect Road, Prospect
OK, so you just want pizza – we get it. Luckily the crew at Prospect diner Anchovy Bandit are all over it – and, with a wood oven imported from Italy, we can confirm the pizzas are the goods. Book for bottomless pizza on a Monday night for $30 per person. There are five toppings on offer, from traditional Neapolitan margherita to fennel-spiked pork sausage and a personal favourite: kimchi pizza. Cocktails are cheap, too, at $13 for Aperol Spritz and Negroni. Sittings are 90 minutes.
DON DON KOREAN BBQ
184 Hindley Street, Adelaide
A Korean barbecue is always a fun night out and at Don Don Korean BBQ you can master that hotplate to your heart’s (and stomach’s) content. Pay $38.90 (Monday to Thursday) to eat all you can within a 90-minute window. We’re talking chef-prepared bibimbap and dumplings to cook-your-own slices of pork, seafood, chicken and duck. It’s $15.60 for kids aged five to 9; $18.90 for nine- to 12-year-olds; and free for kids under four, inclusive. Heads up: adults pay $39.90 on weekends, and these guys are hot on wastage – you’ll be charged $9.90 if there’s leftover food on your plate.
GREAT RIVER KOREAN BBQ
103 Gouger Street, Adelaide
If you love Don Don, try Great River which is just down the road. Here you’ll find all your usual cook-your-own meats and seafoods, as well as noodles and veggie-based fare. There are more than 60 dishes to choose from.
It costs $34 Monday to Thursday and $36 Friday to Sunday, and it’s always $15 for children aged three to eight, and $18 for nine- to 12-year-olds.
WATERMARK
631 Anzac Highway, Glenelg North
We couldn’t forget this icon of a buffet! The team at Glenelg’s Watermark says its buffet is “better than ever” with a range of entrees and hot soups, fresh salads, roasts with all the trimmings, and a selection of Asian-inspired dishes. Seafood includes salmon and mussels and there’s enough dessert to put smiles on all faces. Prices range from $27.95 to $32.95 for lunch and from $31.95 to $39.95 for dinner, depending on the day.
Plus, there are discounts for seniors and children aged six to 14, who pay $21.95 for lunch and $31.95 for dinner, and $16.95 for all meals, respectively.
Children under five eat for free.
MUGEN HOUSE JAPANESE
408 King William Street, Adelaide
If you like quality sushi as well as quantity, then Mugen House is the place for you. It’s $47 per adult for a well thought-out menu, from the chilled tuna tataki (seared sliced tuna with yuzu and ponzu), to gyoza, fried chicken and grilled proteins. There’s also a range of nigiri and sushi rolls, as well as noodles, rice and soup. Got a sweet tooth? Try the green tea panna cotta or fried banana served with ice cream.
INDIA HOUSE
Hallett Cove Shopping Centre, 246 Lonsdale Road, Hallett Cove
This southern favourite has recently brought back its $25 all-you-can-eat buffet on Friday nights, in response to high demand. The Indian buffet boasts winter warming favourites, from the vegetarian navratan korma to butter chicken and beef vindaloo. There’s also everyone’s favourite garlic naan and onion bhaji.
