“I wanna take you to a gay bar” sings – well, shrieks – Fringe ambassador and self-styled new people’s princess Reuben Kaye, cranking up the gasp-o-meter up a few notches with his outrageous late-night variety show The Kaye Hole.
Miss Betty Bombshell’s pasties are still whirling in opposite directions, while the rhinestone cowboy Dale Woodbridge-Brown demonstrated his prowess with the bullwhip, snipping off a rose-head whose stem was deftly inserted, well, out of sight. That was quite something to see.
Elke Uhd slung off her slingbacks while stripping high on the trapeze, and Kaye himself was looking heavenward in a raging performance of Randy Newman’s God’s Song (That’s Why I Love Mankind).
Among the other acts, the permanently sozzled Tina del Twist was an instant hit.
“You’re a superstar, at the gay bar,” Kaye cries, as the clock ticks over into tomorrow. With a tight four-part band adding to the sense of occasion, The Kaye Hole is blissfully offensive. It’s a must.
