Tash York’s Happy Hour
Cabaret
Rating: ****
Melba Spiegeltent at Gluttony
Until March 6
From start to finish, this show delivers exactly what the performers promise: A “hit of serotonin” not unlike that happy buzz you get from cheap drinks at happy hour.
Supported by fabulous drag queens, the Red Red Wines, Tash York delivers a warm and fun show, filled with music, jokes, funny anecdotes and skits.
A five-piece band, which includes Red Red Wines members June Bag and Vino Fonteyn with a bassist, violinist and keyboardist, provides full sounding, high-energy music which is really engaging and entertaining.
York also demonstrates stunning vocal skills as she performs parody hits and originals, including an improvised song on what grinds audience members’ gears.
The comedy cabaret is telling of our time, with references to surviving the world’s longest lockdown and the pandemic, what makes York happy, and some more racy, daring material.
There are quirky skits between songs, including once titled Goon of Fortune.
A few costume changes, including a full, sparkling leotard, lift the fun of the show and strengthen York’s brilliantly confident stage presence.
