The Kingfisher at Gluttony

Until March 20

Award-winning comedian Tahir is still the epitome of Australiana lowbrow humour.

Whether you love or hate him, it’s no surprise audiences flock to see him. Tahir is larger than life.

His stage presence and personality are charming and inviting, yet his jokes can be risky.

Tahir’s show is an observation of human behaviour. He toys with audience members and highlights them as a focal part of his show.

However, Tahir somehow blurs the line between cultural appropriation and racism. His stand-up comedy includes elements of personal stories, magic and improvisation.

For better or worse, he does accents and stereotypical racial jokes.

The Turkish comedian reasons with audiences by saying he loves accents and all cultures, even mentioning he “grew up multiculturally”.

But does that exclude comedians from making jokes that are technically offensive and considered racist?
