How does a girl raised with Asian manners – not to date, be loud or swear – make herself heard in the unfamiliar world of Western musical theatre and tertiary education?
With much energy, enthusiasm, generosity and delightfully self-deprecating humour, if emerging singer-songwriter Kira Yang’s fast-paced and slickly produced show is anything to judge by.
The generosity comes in the way Yang shares the spotlight with fellow graduates from Elder Conservatorium’s new bachelor of music theatre degree, who each get to shine as they perform excerpts of everything from Cabaret and Chicago to contemporary pop hits.
Yang is perky and highly animated as she tries to turn her Kung Fu moves into sexy dance routines and incorporates her own songs into some impressive classical piano practice.
There are Sondheim-style warm-up routines, impressive choreography throughout and some clever twists on the lyrics of classic musical theatre songs.
If Yang is only just coming out of her shell, she and her former classmates are going to be talents to watch.
