Speechless does not even begin to describe one’s reaction coming out of Stephen Sheely’s revisited performance of Fundamental Human Stupidity.
Giving the impression of a first-year foundation course lecturer, Sheely leads you to question whether this is in fact comedy or you’ve signed yourself up for four years of student loans. Leading his mature audience through a journey of some historical and some more modern examples of what he defines very clearly as “stupidity” Sheely, while passionate at some stages, misses the mark in his delivery.
He comes across more like a teacher than a comedian. If you’re looking for a philosopher to tell you what not to do, perhaps this show will prove worthwhile.
However, if you’re aching for the kind of quick wit and perfect delivery that will make you fall off your chair and leave the venue hailing Sheely as a comedic hero, this isn’t that show. His material, at times, was rather funny and indeed very educational.
However, Sheely seems more like an uncle who is trying to stay relevant at a family gathering than a well-executed performer of utterly mind blowing humour.
